We need more info.
What type of riding is she interested in?
How is she going to use the ATV?
Was she happy on the 300?
I just picked up a 2006 Honda TRX250EX. A nice one can be had for around $1900.00 (where I live).
The '06 TRX250EX is a Entry to intermediate level rider machine.
The 'clutch' is Honda's 'Sport Clutch'. It gives the rider the option of using the clutch lever to shift. Beginners like it cause they don't have to 'slip the clutch to get moving. Advanced riders like it because it feels like a tradional clutch when needed.
In '06 Honda put a reverse in the machine. Great for beginners.
The TRX250EX is also shaft drive. With a sealed drive system there is almost zero maintance.
The bike is electric start, 5 speed plus, reverse.
Shaft driven. Plenty of power to trail ride with. EZ to maintain. Ton's of goodies available too.

She has done dune riding and trail riding and that's what we intend to do..and she I gonna try to keep up with me and my 04 yz450 she did like the 300 ...but she was only 16 when she rode that and is 21 now and about 5 inches taller and about 30 or 40 lbs bigger so I'm thinking a 400 would be a good size quad

I recently had the same delima... I wound up with an '06 Yamaha Bruin 350 4x4 for $2500.

Perfect. Auto everything (even brakes, basically :banghead: ) Simple air/oil cooled and keeps up pretty well!

If she's carefull the 400EX will work for her. The power delivery is smooth and not abrupt.
Don't get me wrong. 3rd gear power wheelies are EZ to do.
If you buy '05 or newer they come with reverse. Very handy.
I would suggest whatever size you buy, add a set of 'nerf bars, with 'heel guards'.
