The rear is also great, the pros use this tire at RedBull Romaniacs where they meet the most varied terrain: mud, grass, hardpack, rocks, clay, foliage, water, slippery roots ...

Not saying the FIM Scorpion Pro isn't good but they can't run anything but a FIM approved tire due to rules.

Mx extra is a great rear tyre.  Heaps of grip in mud and loose loam, really durable in rocky terrain. Not great traction on hard pack greasy stuff but hey it is a wicked tyre 95% of the time. I would buy it again

Agreed.  In the hardpack greasy stuff the MT16 with 10ps is great.  The MX Extra has an edge in the loose.  Both are close but each has its slightly better points.

I'm considering trying a Pirelli.  Got an RM needing a 110x90-19 & a 21" front.

Ride in lots of sharp-edged loose rocks & int dirt.  What will last reasonably well ( rocks  ) and meet our terrain conditions?

thanks

MX Extra has one in that size and I would try the Scorpion Pro front.

Anyone running an MT 16 on a 19" rim?  I have only been able to get them in 120/90-19 which means the tire is taller as well as wider than stock.  I have one on my bike (CR250) now and really seem to like it. It does well in most situations and it wears well. Anyone have any input only how this affects the handling of the bike?  I didn't really notice any difference but I didn't test them back to back.

got a fresh one sitting. i'm going to run it a little more then flip it around. things are so dry the tire doesn't need the new edge, it works fine. it likes the mud but hardpack that's wet and greasy, no. MX eXtra is as good as advertised and they're on sale.

Decided to try a Scorpion Pro front after hearing a number of folks singing it's praises.  I've got about 150 km (95 miles) on it and it's taking a beating.  A third of the side knobs are cut or ripped off and the rest are on their way.  Trails are singletrack, 75% what I'd call intermediate/medium dirt and roots with some rocks.  The other 25% is pretty rocky.  Can't say I'm impressed.  I've tried Dunlop, Maxxis, Bridgestone and this Pirelli is the worst yet.

At the same time I put a MT16 on the rear and it's holding up well.  I've never seen a front tire wear faster than the rear but the Scorpion Pro will be done in a few more rides.

Yes, Scorpion Pro is not a buget tire - it wears out fast but grip is excellent.
My front looks like new after 150 miles, but I keep the front light when hitting rocks, roots .. (11 PSI air).

Pirelli XCMS front and rear are the best.  The front grips as good of better than the pro and it holds up much better as well.  The rear is exactly like the MXMS.  I wont use anything else.

i really want to get some new tires but im always broke so im always over thingkin stuff like tires.. cant descide what i want/need or if it really matters. I ride in all kinds of stuff, we have the weirdest riding, in the same single track trail you will be on DUSTY dry stuff, then hit some slick shit, then onto the huge mudhole, then through some deep sand, and then some serious rocky stuff, then onto the off camber hills with giant roots going all over the place... its crazy. so i have a hard time saying "i need this tire.." is there a tire (pirelli) out there that will work good for just about what ever you throw at it? im not worried about sand, i hate sand and will wreck regardless so tires wont make much difference lol. I just dont want to spend big money on a tire that is PERFECT for the first part of the trail and then horrible for the rest. I was thinking about trying the 16 rear, any sugestions? i know there is no perfect tire that lasts for ever and works great everywhere, just never really payed much attention to tires and now id like to!

The Scorpion MX eXtra is a great "all around" intermediate tire IMO. Has performed well on whatever I've thrown at it.

I'm an MT16 tire guy for many years now . For the type of riding I have around here it's the best  but I can't say how it will be for anyplace else. One thing about the MT16 is that even when it's pretty worn the compound of the tire works well.. and for me the slick greasy clay type of mud is the stuff I'm most interested in.

I must say that I have been trying some other tires and for now I'm running some Motoz terrapactor rear tires and running some larger Motoz  tractionator soft terrain in front and it's working well in a variety of terrain and lasting a long time. I wont say that it works better than a Pirelli MT16 but it works close enough and it lasts longer.. It lasts a long time. The reality is I think each person has to try each tire for their area of riding and play with tire pressures etc. I chose the Motoz terrapactor since it was lighter and had a softer sidewall. I think that the Tractionator may work better for others as the sidewall is way thicker and the tire is heavier. I'm guessing desert guys might like it or dualsport types.. I don't know just guessing. My buddy is running the tractionator on his street legal 450 4t KTM. I'm running the terrapactor on my Beta 525 RS and my cr 250 honda. I'd say its worth a try for you as it lasts long and works good all around. I still think that the MT16 is the best but I don't think it's the best for the money for what I ride. Put a search and see what others say about the tire...  The reality is everyone rides different stuff so you can't straight out say one tire is better than another. What attracted me to the Motoz was the super aggressive tread patterns. It looks cool and the front tire especially is more aggressive tread wise than anything else I've seen. It sticks well and has lasted long. I was using a 90/100-21 scorpian I think it was and that worked well even when the knobs were all busted off at the end. I was kind of surprised and it did have a nice feel to the front end. The motoz flat out sticks up front but the feel is different than the scorpian pirellis..hard to describe but both quite still comparable in overall effectiveness. The motoz lasts longer though. Here's my Beta and my friends KTM with motoz tires..If you wander around my youtube channel you can see what we ride if you want comparisons but that's hard to tell ..

My buddies tractionator in back is way over a year and that thing still looks pretty new. His tire is heavier and actually takes a few rides to break in.. not like the MT16 that works best brand new right out of the box.

What about checking what the experienced vets and what the guys at your local bike shops say? Look around at what guys use at your local trail races etc.. That should give a good indication too. When you go to local races around here there are tons of brand new MT16's on the line for trail races.. all brand new with nice edges..From what I see that's the majority of the faster guys and what the vet guys are using. There's a couple of trials tires and a some Michelin S12's and some MX51's but more MT16's than anything else.. No one was bringing in Motoz from what I saw but I asked my dealer to bring a couple in  and I like it so far. I haven't gotten to the end of the tires use yet ...

Here's kind of a cross section of the stuff we ride here with more tight stuff not being shown.

well the bike shops are either die hard michilin fans or die hard MX51 fans.. i have had no luck with either, they performed well but didnt last no time! and with all the costs of racing i can not afford to put new rubber on every other race. There are TONS if mich. S12's FRONTS at the races and everyone i know who runs them swears by them but i dont thing they're that great.. i would LOVE to run all different types and find one that suits me well but my wallet has other ideas.. Thats why i was asking. i think i will try the MT16 rear and for the front, i have no idea. Thanks for the input though!

Take a look at the Motoz. for the front. It lasts long..For your money I'd pick that one since it lasts so long. I'm pretty sure you will pay a cheaper price than I do too.. It depends on what part of the country you are of course..Shop around and see if your shops are good parts guys. If they only have a hard on to sell only the Michelin or the MX51 they aren't especially great parts guys to me. The MX51 isn't bad but it doesn't last and I don't know about the front of the michelin S12 but I absolutely hate the S12 for the rear for a variety of reasons. I'd say it lasts long but it doesn't hook up well for me and it packs and doesn't clear out mud.. But that's my experience of it. I was lurking on a few threads before trying the Motoz and I'm pretty happy since it lasts.
Here's a couple of threads that got me interested awhile back...

Dwight, any recommendations for MT16 rear tire pressure for nasty rock enduros? RORR / Broad Mountain is this weekend and it will rain most of this week so the MT43 may be out of its element with some swamp mud expected. I am not using bibs yet so a HD tube is what I am working with. Last year I ran 13psi and had no pinch flats as a slower C class racer. I have had good experiences with the bridgestone M59 front in the rocks (surprisingly).
