I've been working toward getting my CRF450X street legal, and finally thought I was ready today, so I took it to a local (Carson City) dealer to do the inspection.

Right away, we were at odds because he said I need a metal tank. I knew this wasn't in fact the case and showed him the DMV paperwork to prove as much.

Everything went OK from there, until he was checking the brake lights. It's currently only activated on activation of the rear brake. He says it needs to activate on application of both brakes. I don't think this is the case, and before I go ahead and buy a switch, I want to be sure he's not getting confused with another state again. Does anyone know for sure if they need to be activated on BOTH brakes? The DMV paperwork is less than clear

"STOP LAMPS 486.251, 484D.125
Mounted on rear of vehicle
Display a red, amber, or yellow light
Be visible from at least 300 feet to the rear in normal sunlight
Be activated upon application of the brake
May be incorporated with the tail lamp"

The cited NRS don't help clarify the issue, either.
"NRS 486.251 Use of head lamps, stop lights and turn signals required.

2. Every motorcycle or moped operated upon a highway must be equipped with stop lights to be lighted in the manner prescribed for the use of such devices."

So, anyone have a for sure yay/nay on that? I'm not concerned with what's a "Good Idea," just what's the minimum to be legal.

Also, he mentioned "Get that fixed then we'll take it to have it vented" Any idea &%$#@! that means? I can't imagine it means being smogged, as DMV explicitly exempts motorcycles from emissions tests.

Find another dealer to do the inspection. Obviously the guy is uninformed. I had my CRF450X inspected and plated here in Vegas with just the rear brake activating the light. The DMV regs and the NRS are not clear so how can they force a requirement they can't clarify? Find another shop. If he thinks you need it smogged he is really smokin something'.

When I got my bike converted I was also told Nevada does require front and rear brake light switches along with other things I would consider trivial. The funny thing is the only thing they looked for at the DMV when they did my VIN inspection was DOT tires. It seems the dealer inspections, at least the one I got, was pretty strict, they had a checklist of everything that was required.

Update:

I called the Honda dealership, who said I should be good to go.

I took it in, got it inspected and swung by the DMV> The inspector there just verified the VIN and signed off. 2 hours and $150 later and it's legal.
