Broke my Metacarpal bone in my right hand the other day. Went in and got an xray and splint. It doesnt appear to be bad. Not a ton of swelling or pain either. The nuckle it is attached to looks sunken into my hand.

My question is, am i going to do a lot more harm if i ride on this hand? What is the absolute minimum time i should spend off the bike?

The metacarpal fracture isn't important.  Your scafoid bone is broken and displaced.  That needs immediate medical treatment.
Are the doctors snow blind up there?

apparently..

Thanks for the reply and heads up. That could very possibly be an old fracture.

Definitely my fault though. I hurt my wrist 2 years ago and it didnt hurt that bad so i just kept riding on it. never thought to get it looked at. had a few months off in the winter for it to get better but my wrist had lost quite a bit of flexibility and seemed to ache after being on the bike.

Dunno if i have any options for getting the old fracture fixed, but ill make an apt tomorrow morning with an ortho

Heres another angle

I broke my 3rd metacarpal about 2 years ago. The knuckle sunk into my hand and sticks out a bit on my palm. The doctor told me he could re-break and set it (days after the injury...) and try to bend it back. He said I wouldn't notice it other than appearance-wise. If you have the option to have it fixed where it won't be sunk in I strongly suggest you do it. I'll wish my entire life (I'm 17) that I had had it fixed completely because it sticks out on my palm and causes all sorts of problems . If I smack something too hard on my palm (I guess not really my palm but above it before the fingers) it will actually stab the inside of my hand and I get minor internal bleeding in my hand and small blue pools of blue will show up. It's nothing like I had expected and I wish I would've gotten it fixed. I just want to pass on my experience and let you know that it's worth the extra pain it would cause because this will affect me my entire life.

Thanks for your input, that sounds pretty difficult to live with.. Luckily my metacarpal doesnt seem anywhere near as displaced as yours. The knuckle is only slightly lower, and looks worse because of swelling. If the doc says he wants to set it i will listen to him for sure though!

Yup. It's not like I notice it every day... Or even every week. But sometimes it's just ridiculous!! Mine I thought was just slightly because of swelling, but it turns out it was worse. Just thought I'd share my experience. Good luck!!

Your fine dude,17? suprized it even injured you.JK
Nah my right hand is fully jacked,I broke my middle finger up in my hand 25yrs ago and it still gives me trouble.
Also jacked everything skating, snowboarding and BMX'n,been less hurt on dirtbikes than anything.
Broke
both 5th metatarsals in my feet
shattered left ankle, have 3 screws and 2 plates in it
wrists are like rock tumblers, constant grinding
shoulders torn rotaters skating
back jacked, never got it looked at,snowboarding
and both hips constantly grind and pop
knees same way
Wait as long as possible, the worst thing is repetitive injury to the same spot.
I'm only 42 and it seriously hurts to just walk and do menial tasks, standing up is the worst,I still ride pit bikes tho.Sounds like a popcorn popper when I walk.

LET IT HEAL!!!!
And best of luck to you!

Got that too.
Had those blue things happen before but it was from b-ball,hot passes or hanging on the rim.

Is the "your fine surprised it even injured you" thing to me? I punched a guy in the face, that's how I broke mine. I broke My 3rd 4th and 5th metatarsals in my left foot, and whatever the little bones in your toes are called also. I've got a screw in my ankle from this last september when I hit a telephone pole on my birthday and totaled my car. And countless other breaks here and there lol. And then I meet older people who hve never broken a bone and I just think to myself, how boring they're life must have been!

I have no regrets for punching that smug prick in the face. As for the pole that was an accident lol but I broke fingers and toes jumping out of and from one barn to another. And falling out of trees and such lol. Definitely fun.

It never ceases to amaze me how all the "tough guys" on TT continue to ride with painful fractures or even more serious injuries. I love riding more than almost anything, but if you want to be riding(Or even walking) without constant pain when you are 60 years old, sometimes you gotta take a break in order for injuries to heal.

You should always have fractures treated properly and allow them to fully heal before exposing them to further trauma. Even if it doesn't hurt bad, it's not worth the risk for future problems. And if you ever see pro athletes playing with broken and pinned hands and wrists, keep in mind they have a small army of trainers and doctors to tend to them and get paid millions, you don't.
