So I bought a 1993 KX 500 from the original owner, and he said he's never had the top end apart( original piston & rings). Is this even possible?

Maybe he just hasnt ridden it that much and ridden it very hard. He could be just short shifting riding. You don't need to open that bike up to be riding with speed.

definitely possible, those 500s are so damn powerful they arent revved like other 2 strokes most of the time

Id put a new topend in it no matter how good it currently runs. Especially if you are unsure of its history. They can develope stress cracks along the skirts of the piston with alot of run time. Thats what happened to the previous owner of my 02 500. New bottom end, cases, crank etc. and he was back in business.
