These bikes have 7 year old technology and can still keep up at the pro level.  What does that mean?  It means that local racers saying they Need a brand new 4 stroke and that 2 strokes are dead are naive.  Motocross is cheaper, more fun, and just as fast with 2 strokes.  Especially if the companies would develope 2 strokes like they did with 4 strokes.  we could have sub-200lb 250 2 strokes making the same amount of power as a 450 and it would use a $100 piston!  The only downside is that manufacturers couldnt make as much money off of us as they can with the 4 strokes and motocross would now include the middle class.  Plus racing would be way too much fun to watch which means more crowded tracks..  that would suck.  I want motocross to be for the top 1% of society like polo.    I also think the tracks should be made of velvet and the jumps should have 5 mile long landings and plenty of stopping room before turns.  The price of a rebuild should total out any bike that sticks a valve and the big bikes should weigh 300lbs, have EFI, traction control, automatic transmissions, 5 point harnesses, and balancing devices that over-ride the rider to keep the bike from tipping over.  This would make motocross wayyy better so stick with 4 strokes and it will happen!

Um current AMA MX rules say 194 pounds for a lites two stroke and I believe 212 for a big bike two stroke as the minimum weights. So sub 200 pound 250's are not going to fly nder the current structure

Wasnt there a time when the structure did not allow 450cc bikes to race in the "250" class?  And that was one of my weaker points.  we should get back to the results that the 250 2 stroke from 2006 beat a bunch of  2012 factory bikes in stock form!

Fun Fact: His qualifing time was faster than  18+ of the 450′s that made it to the night show. Yes.. 450′s.

Yes, there was a time when they didn't allow 4 strokes up to 450cc to race in the 250 class. Instead they allowed up to 550cc.

Let it go, this topic has been beaten to death. Ride what you prefer and let other people make their own decisions. That's what I do.

Has your bike ever been weighed before a race?  I could have a 120 lb bike and get away with it easily.

the thing is that if people stay under the false impression that 4 strokes are the perfect race bike they will stop making 2 strokes.  then Im forced to ride a 4 stroke only because of the naive people who wont admit that a 4T will not make you faster.  Then, since 4 strokes are gay, it will blow up and cost me $2500 to fix.  Then its byebye motocross forever because of people like you letting a wildfire spread.

Not unless you are a billionaire. To get to 120 pounds on a 250 two stroke would probably cost you close to 300K

Thats a bit harsh...but you can not stop the hype of the 4 stroke craze until a 2 stroke goes backout and beats the field just like Doug Henry did on the YZ400F

it was meant to put into perspective just how much that rule is not enforced.  I thought it was obvious that i wasn't claiming that i could actually own that light of a bike.  and where did you get $300k from?  Is there some sort of weight-bike price calculator that I am not aware of?

How many times do I have to win open C on my 2001 yz250 before the 4 stroke craze ends???

But my dad can beat up your dad.

How you do in the 'C' class means next to nothing. It is how you do in the 'A' class that carries some weight. But if you would like a number, I'd say about eleventy-thousand.

Ugh, when will this banal discussion of how 'X' is better than 'Y' end? It would be one thing f there were facts instead of 'feel good' purchase justifications.

there are facts.  250 2stroke= 46hp  250 4stroke=34hp
  250 2stroke full rebuild= $400?  250 4stroke rebuild=$2000?
250 2stroke sound carries .75 miles?  250f sound carries forever?
2stroke lap times = 4 stroke lap times.

how are those facts for you???  I think 4 stroke guys are the ones who need purchase justification when i beat them on my $1500 bike and they spend $9000!!!!!!!1

If my broke ass can afford to own a 4-stroke, anybody can.  Unless you think all that 15W50 goes into the gas tank with the 91-octane or you're Justin Barcia without the army of mechanics at your beck and call, you shouldn't grenade a 4-stroke without some form of bad luck.

Two strokes are great, they're fun to ride, and don't require quite as much maintenance as a 4-stroke, but to some people a 4-stroke is just more fun.  It's all personal preference. Trying to convince a 4-stroke rider that 2-strokes are the be-all end-all of dirt bikes, or vice versa, is like a Ford guy trying to explain to a Chevy guy why Ford's better.

No its like trying to explain to a helicopter missle shooter guy that a 30-06 will kill deer just as good for cheaper and not destroy the meat that you get from hunting.  I think 4 strokes should not be the only source of develpment for the manufacturers and the more people that adopt this thought will make more of a chance for future development by the big 4 and KTM.  2 strokes make MX more accessible
