Assuming it's not a 'tick' or a 'knock' (usually pre-casistrophic noises), it's probably a stretched timing chain bouncing around..
When was the last rebuild........

Its not a ticking or knocking noise, its more of something rubbing where it shouldn't be. If you have it running and you stick your head to the left side of the motor you can tell that the sound is dominant on the top of the motor near the valve cover. I just barely did a rebuild that consist of: new timing chain, cam chain tensioner, cam chain tensioner guide, new kawasaki piston/rings, and new exhaust cam. It has maybe 10 minutes on it since the rebild. But the noise was happening before the rebuild. That was the main reason for pulling everything apart in the first place.
