Grim news and commonly known news.... I am a dummy.

I went out to today to spray my cylinder, head and rocker box down with WD40 because I washed it with simple green, soap and water about 2 or 3 days ago. Well, apparently I didn't dry all of the water off! My valve springs have spots of surface rust  and a tiny part of my tappet has a freckle of rust too. What... Will it do? will it hurt my engine? I'm thinking it is such a minor amount it's okay to leave it. But then  this side of me is sick about it. I sprayed both of the pieces with engine degreaser until I felt weezy and then followed that up with WD40 until all three were dripping. They still feel slick so I am happy about that. I also learned a valuable lesson that I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN already.

I think it'll be okay, ordering gasket sometime this week. Piston rings are 57 bucks? That is nuts! Are all piston rings that expensive?

The rust was just on the very outer surface? I think it should be okay.

Piston rings are usually only 20 or 30.

Unless, of course, this is a 3-ring motor, 1 oil control, 2 compression. then the set would be a decent price.

Riding that beast will be worth it once it is all finished up. Any more progress on cosmetics?

Well right now I am at a stand still. I'm out of work and my wife's business is slow so my agreed on budget is 20 bucks every 2 weeks. So, I'm not moving an inch right now. The cylinder, head and rocker box look great except for those freckles of rust inside, which as far as I am concerned do not exist outside of this thread.

I am going to clean the frame up tomorrow, it's raining today. Gonna take a few parts to the recycling place to get some cash for their weight. Ruined parts and things I can't resell! Cracked rims, rusty spokes, forks, handlebars, lever mounts, etc.. Crap parts! Once that happens   I'll have a good headstart on some savings. Might have a job soon hopefully, this economy sucks! Good thing nothing last forever right?

I did a leak test and my valves seat completely and do not leak. I was really stoked. One thing though, I want to polish them up and maybe do some grinding. I'll start researching proper procedure on that and looking around.

That is a really small budget. The cash for the weight of those parts is a good idea though.

Great that the valves do not leak, I am not sure about valve grinding or polishing but I think a have an article about it in this book. I'll look for it now.

It doesn't have the actual technique to it. It would be nice to have that rain over here in Phoenix tomorrow, going to ride then. First test on the new fix.

I am not sure where the camera is. It is my brother's so it is probably hidden somewhere. I'll post it if my bike is working correctly.

For sure! Hey, some guy rammed me for not replacing my valve springs on this rebuild. Should I? I didn't know replacing valve springs was a commonality in top end rebuilds. I mean, all my bike needs is gaskets and piston rings? My valves seat properly and the rubber seals for the valve covers are like brand new. Am I missing something? Should I replace my valve springs?

Also, if I replace my valve springs what if they aren't stock and what if my rocker arms wear more. Would that be a valid concern?

Thanks for keeping up with me mx!

I am not one that is an expert on four-strokes, so I wouldn't be able to tell you about wearing rocker arms and all that. But, what I do know is that you should replace the valves and springs, just so an unexpected failure doesn't occur. Spending money before one happens is much cheaper than when something goes wrong and completely destroys everything. As far as we know, this motor may have been used by a 16 year old kid that constantly abuses the motor, but no obvious problems are visible. The structural integrity of parts could be low.

The valves and springs are supposed to be changed every 2 piston changes.

  I will know that for every bike I ever own now. Thank you so much!

About to go soon, just picking up the trailer from another house. I have the Gopro mounted on the handlebar, so you can get a pretty good view. I'll also have it on the helmet.

I went out and took my forks off, rims etc.. I saw my triples said "ProFab" on them. I thought, well these triples look cool, would look even cooler flat black or flat white. I looked around for ProFab parts and I guess that company isn't around. I asked on a post on another forum and was informed they are hard to find. I want to sell these triples, I have absolutely no need for rare hard to find VMX triple trees. This bike is going to be driven like a grandpa owns it as long as it's under my care and ridden only around town and mild free way use. So, if you read this and want these triples, they will be on Ebay pretty soon.
