I also oiled the unpainted pipe with motor oil to prevent rust. Changed the motoroil. Filled the tank with 30:1 98 octane fuel.

At least you had a GEN3 CR to start with, which has decent graphics/aftermarket goodies availability. Try owning a GEN1 97-99!! HA! Not only is there nothing but the typical cliche lame graphics, but the gen1 plastics just look god AWFUL...In a way though, the 97-99 plastics (with the huge long side panel plastic that covers the entire side and connects to the radiator shroud plastic) Seems to have come full circle again with the 09-12 CRF plastic kit. The one I loooove. What I mean is both the oldddd and new CRF plastic kits share the same basic design. I can't overstate the use of the word basic lol but the new CRF plastics, and the ones leading up to it keep getting slimmer and edgier with time. Sort of like how the body on american trucks has gotten bigger and bigger. Thanks Dodge.
Anyway, I'm stoked because I've done endless searching of the web for this 09-12 CRF conversion. It's hard enough to find done on a 02-08 CRF, much less a CR250 so close to mine in age!!!! This is great.
So here's what's up. Bought this 2004 CRF250 gas tank and oem shrouds from a friend for dirt cheap, just for test fitting. To my amazement, the fit was actually pretty amazing. In this picture the tank is ON and mounted, but the radiator shrouds are only mounted on top 2 bolts to the tank. The lower 2 are just hanging.

The hardest part of this was getting the gas tank to fit my frame correctly. It took cutting out the entire bottom-front of the CRF tank and custom building/molding the shape I needed. It needed a deep 90 degree ridge several inches from the front, because the gen1 frames where the frame comes together near the tank bolt mount, has a thick metal brace crossmember that connects the 2 frame spars and houses the CDI and other electrics. The 00-01 and 02-07 did not have this. Here is an idea of how insanely off the CRF tank is.

Cutting and refitting the bottom front of CRF tank seems like a nightmare, but really was actually pretty easy. I first tried heating and molding it with heat gun, but put a hole in it within my first attempt. That technique's only good for if you need to make a slight dent to clear the spark plug or something. Not for completely remolding lol So the new route is the RIGHT WAY.
I would just use my OEM 98 tank, but I HATE it because it just looks terrible in that off white yellow, and looks terrible on conversions because the sleeker shrouds always show gaps where the tank shows alot and shows that terrible yellowing. Black tank hides it perfectly, and there was NO way to paint, coat, or decal my tank to make it black other than dying it black, but dying it is more of a messy PITA than modding the CRF tank. Another big reason for using a newer black tank obviously is so the shrouds/seat will fit perfectly, and the black hides and gap imperfections. Night/day difference!!
SO, this is where I changed it all up. I've decided if I'm going to go to all this trouble doing a conversion, why not do the plastic kit that I REALLY want/love? I got to looking at graphics kits for the 2004 CRF and was surprised that the selection wasn't as great as I thought. The 2012 CRF plastics had ALL the graphics kits I loved. If I can do the 04, then I can do the 2012!!!
Gavin, what's crazy is I know your bike very well and you've even told me the conversion you did a while back, but at the time I had no clue... My searches finally led to you after a while though, and I'm stoked to see a CR250 with these!!!
As you probably read in my message man I would kill to have you just list to me every single thing you did? I am keeping my 98 subframe and 98 air box. Don't want to hack it up at all.
What I need to know now is IF the 2012 CRF shrouds tank bolt holes will line up on the 04 CRF tank? I'll be able to salvage this 2004 CRF gas tank??? It's not a big deal if I can't, but the distance of the 2 bolt holes on the gas tank of the 2012 tank and the 04 look damn close!! Does anyone know if they'll fit OR does anyone know of a CRF around 2004ish that converted to the 09-12 CRF plastics using the stock tank? Trying to find out if it will work or not...If not I'll just pick up a 2012 tank, no biggie! I don't want to have to drill holes in the new plastic or make brackets on the tank...Everywhere else I can weld in new mounting tabs or make really clean mounting brackets!
You'll be glad to know I'll be using that 3D carbon fiber wrap to wrap my entire subframe, air box, and on any brackets, and some other key spots. This thing is going to be incredible. Going to take my time with it. Sorry for writing all this gavin and everyone, but I've got so many questions to find the best overall fit, and there is damn near no info out there! Any help is always greatly appreciated.
Let's keep this thread alive and always be modding our Honda 2 strokes

Man I just read his build thread right before I wrote that message earlier...and I'm 99% sure on a 02-07 but if it is a gen2 that's even closer to my year bike!!
It LOOKS like the 2012 CRF shrouds will not fit on my 04 CRF tank. It's weird, the tanks bolt locations look IDENTICAL. If they are off, it has to be by **** hair lol but the angle on the tank is of equal concern.
The problem is these 09-12 CRF tanks are expensive as hell!!! LOL If I can locate one for a decent price, giving me the green light on the new plastics then I'm going to just relocate all the OEM mount tabs so it truly does have a factory fit. I'll never want to switch plastics again, and my bike isn't going anywhere...

Hey buddy I appreciate the reply and I understand where you're coming from and all, but If I have to drill through the shrouds or similar I just won't be doing this swap. The thing is I already HAVE cut and molded the 04 CRF250 tank for a perfect fit, and now no drilling, and the shrouds sit perfect with the bike/frame.
My stock tank is the off white/yellow one. I finally contacted that carbon fiber vinyl company 3m about wrapping my gas tank, desperate to find a way to make it dark/black and that stuff will not work on any plastic gas tank. The bubble free only works for application and air bubbles, not constant petrol vapor.
The only real option is to dye the stock tank, and at that point it's infinitely easier to mod the newer tank, which is perfectly black, perfect fit, and just 1000x better for the job. All these bike are twin spar frames, so the basic "ridge" of all the tanks fits on the frame. It's just a matter of making sure the bottom is molded and perfect.
The crazy thing is the tank I've already made perfect is actually the WORST possible one to try and fit. The 09-12 tank will be wayyy much less work and will fit my bike ALMOST naturally. It'll need a little work, but the final fit and look will pay off 10fold!!!
So settle the dispute. What year is your bike? I say gen3 02-07 KCD says 00-01...And what exactly did you have to "hack" on the air box because I am totally against anything like that. I can always make a cut and mold something even better I guess. I'm going to wrap the entire air box inside and out and subframe in that carbon fiber 3d wrap. It's going to be stupid.
