Hi everyone,
I just purchased a 2000 model xr400 but the speedo doesn't work for some reason, I have taken the front wheel off and found that the device with the two cogs in it which turns the cable connected to the speedo, was seized full of greese and dirt. Using wd40 and carbie cleaner i was able to get all that to work although the speedo still wont work. i have confirmed that the cable is spining when the wheel is turned where it screws into the speedo.
Im not sure what else i could try to get it to work? The speedo only has 1460km on it.
Do these speedos require voltage to work or are they entirely mechanical?
Thanks in advance.

You need to confirm that the speedo end on the inner cable can not be kept from turning while gripping it with your fingers while rotating the wheel. If that's ok, then look at the slot that the cable end slips into on the back of the speedo and make sure it's not stripped out. If that's ok, the only other thing it can be is the speedos internals. You have nothing to lose by taking it apart to see if there's something you can do with it.

Hi. When you remove the round nylon drive cog, make sure there are 2 thin washers under it. if theseare missing the speedo will never work.
