You will like the BD kit.. We have been playing with all the kits on the market and working towards a few of our own..
The BD kit is by far the most complete highest quality kit presently on the market. IMO..
Cost a bit more, but that pays off very fast.. TT discount available from Cyclops.

One of my riding partners, Jay just got the plate for his XR650R today. The Honda Shop in Yakima installed the Baja Designs dual sport kit on his bike and also did the inspection. Everything works perfect and he is a happy camper. He had to take the paper work to to the Yakima Court house because that is where the only Department of Motor vehicles that has handled any of these coversions in Yakima is located.

My XR650R is next I called Baja designs today to order parts. I am doing my own work. The local Honda Shop in Quincy is doing inspection and then I will have to find a local DMV that has handled any of these conversions.

Did he change the stator?

Did the shop verify light output at idle?

Even if a light is marked DOT, it is not in compliance with RCW46.37.220 if it dims to far at idle as many XR tend to do.

What agency interprets that RCW as applying at engine idle?
Do they also specify idle RPM?

Just going by what the Revised Code of Washington specifies.

RCW46.37.522 says that the headlight must function while in motion.

If the headlight output does not comply with RCW46.37.220 at anytime while the motorcycle is in motion, it would be hard to consider it a functional headlight for the purpose of RCW46.37.522 compliance.

I had my stator rewound by Baja Designs years ago so I could accomodate Grip heaters and a brighter light and an after market E-start. My output is 250 or 2X125. I recommended Jay do this to his bike which he did. So yes the stator was rewound for maximum output.

Tod , as I read 46.37.220 all it says is the low beam must pick up objects at 150 feet and the high beam must pick up objects at 450 feet. "Under any load", I assume means at any speed from a crawl to full rpm. That should not be a problem with 125Watts dedicated to the light only.

Inspection and plate... easy peasy!!! Mikes Powersports in Spokane was awesome. Called and made an appointment, they were right on it and super nice and easy to work with! I also had a couple of excellent "coaching" calls with Coyote Offroad helping me walk through the process and answering questions. I highly recommend both Mike's Powersports and Coyote Offroad for conversion help.

Sounds like it should do the job and then some.
The important CYA step is to verify the assumption.

Well be glad Cycle Barn only screwed you out of $60.  There's a lot of horror stories that come from the Smokey Point Cycle Barn.  I'm surprised the military has not put them off limits.

In fact, I'm surprised they're still in business charging 1-2k more per bike than any of the other dealers in a 100+ mile radius of them...

Could you crank up idle speed for inspection purposes?

Depends on who is doing the inspection and how legal you need/want to be.

Keep in mind that all tickets and warning written against converted bikes are being tracked.
The WSP and Legislature will use this data to evaluate the program.

What is the state truly worried about? They have zero liability...never have, never will.

It sounds like we're some sorta parolee that needs to be monitored...heck why not hook me up with an anklet?
