Hi All:

Seems no matter what bikes I/we look at, I/we keep coming back to the 140L for a Baja Kits dual sport conversion for the wife. I'm now beginning to watch various sale sites to see what is available at what price. I have even found leftover 2008 models!

Is there a particular year that was a good one, or bad one, etc? Aside from graphics, were there any notable upgrades that took place that we'll want?

I hope to have her a bike found/bought/tuned/converted by the end of summer.

ANY input would be much appreciated.

Wow! I'm overwhelmed with the collective knowledge I have tapped into! :bonk:

Seriously: I reckon' since no replies, no one really knows. Thus, the differences must be so miniscule that it doesn't matter what year we go for as long as it's sound and in great shape. Now I've got to stop by the an Oklahoma DMV agency and see if it's still possible to tag a dirt bike.

All the same since they came out. The motor is based on a widely platformed motor built and incorporated into Asian market bikes that Kawi sells product in. The 140L is built in Thailand as a mater of fact. You are safe buying any year 140L since introduction... no gremlins have been "sorted out" between years of manufacture. What issues there may be can be found trolling through this forum. Generally the biggest problem is people getting one and simply wanting more power, more suspension, more a/m parts, etc. Typical for a price point designed mid-sized trails type bike. It may have competition in terms of power/capabilities/handling with other makes, but if you look at it in terms of just what Kawi makes, it splits the difference between the 110 biggie size and 250 motorcross bike. I personally thonk Kawi would be well served introducing a larger mid-sized enduro based bike like the old KLX300, but what do I know. If you buy new, you need to be sure and check the bike has been assembled completely and adequately. I've bought 2, and one did not have the controls tight, handlebar was loose, rear wheel castle nut were only finger tight. This is probably because the dealership had a minimum wage younger man doing the hoo-hum tasks of putting together new bikes, and a 140L probably didn't impress him as much as a 450R or Ninja10, so on. If buying used, as best you can, check for evidence of rust or weeping at bearings (sometimes the bearings are packed sparingly by Kawi), and how the front tubes/handlebar and rear subframe line up... these bikes are usually ridden hard, and dropped hard.

Hi dirtpoor!

Thank you very much for your answers. We will likely purchase new here locally. I'll be sure to watch for the tight bolts/etc you mention!

Thanks again.
