Winters can be long and boring in Utah when you're a bike nut and not a skiier. So I usually reserve the time for various bike builds. I'm nearly completion of my 1987 Super Magna and finished my KTM690E. And with free time have lusted after something classic and cool, yet reliable-something against the norm even! In springs an old Dirt Bike mag article I've kept on Scott Summer's XR6 bike, complete with all the details of his setup. I love reading about guys doing amazing things in the face of adversity; like Scott spanking the 2-stroke crowd with this big monster in enduros and GNCC's. Ha, way back before Doug Henry won with the YZM400 or whatever it was called.

Is an XR6 the easiest bike these days to ride on enduro type terrain? No, but it sure is cool trying to experience what Mr. Summers experienced when he raced. It's also just a simple, clean looking machine. No frills. I like that.

I started looking and found a 1996 XR600 that looks very clean. Has new handguards, new seat cover, new chain and sprockets, White Bros pipe and the claim of a new piston/rings, bored to 0.025 w/ new HotCam Shaft. It's street legal and plated, though I don't intend to be a poser and waste knobbies on the asphalt.

The goal: bring it closer to a modern one of these, but with more updated looks and performance, esp. in the chassis/suspension depatment.

Parts to be updated or changed/added: headlight, front fender, header, footpegs, bars, grips, shift lever, front forks, rear fender (don't need a stupid enduro taillight! Anyone got a like new rear XR6 fender they want to swap for a lighted one?) Plus anything else to add to the project.

PICS OF ITEMS TO BE USED AND/OR UPDATED:
Front headlight has to go! It's big, ugly, blocky and designed in 1980. Replaced with this sleeker, modern Polisport/Moose jobber.

(WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS STUPID FORUM? IT WON'T LET ME INSERT IMAGE CODE!!!!!!! RETARDED)

How stupid I have to save to my photobucket to post a generic fender photo.

Here is what the above jpg is supposed to look like. It's obviously a KTM fender. I will be using a more aggressive and modern looking CRF450R 2009/11 fender in white. The extra venting is the bonus!

For bling and extra heat sinking.

Joker must have been a muscle man to wrestle a 600 round an Enduro course, Some guys used to run the old TT500/600s in Enduros down here,,superhuman effort over two days of tough mud/bog/forest riding. It was bad enough on my XL/XR250/350s let alone a 500/600,,Good luck with the project,,the Summers bike certainly looks the business.,,,Dunno about the photo thing,,I don't even attempt the complex here anymore,,Just post my photos somewhere else and link to them as I've always done as I hate adds and bs in sites so have things running with Firefox that block all the palava,,The blockers subsequently stuff with the features of the site but I just live with it for the speedier reading of posts etc,,

True, you HAD to be a man. You were a man amongst young men if you raced an XR.

I happened to have a complete Ohlins front end that is going on the XR6. Complete with Scott's stabilizer mount and new bars. Still has the bling pieces.

The Ohlins rear shock off this Cannondale isn't going to work. So what's the hot ticket for rear shock upgrades or fixes on the 1996 XR600R?

What impresses me most about Summer's bike is just how close to stock it really is. The big XRs weigh a lot, but the impressive torque can be like cheating.

x2. his bike is less modded than most on this forum! he didnt even use high comp, everyone on here pretty much goes high comp cause its cool, but think about? he didnt and won...not the bike, the rider...

I would say a replica would be cosmetic, plus the stuff already mentioned like case savers, bars, guards....and the suspension...he did have revalved and worked on suspension...

If you could get the specs for that, that would be as close to replica as possible...

oh, dont forget the 250 oil cooler, and exhaust.

thats it!

Whats the deal with the ATK? I swapped my fenders for Fancy pants crf fenders and no I wish I still had the Summers look to my bike. Oh well, replacement plastic for xr's are spendy! The late modle crf fenders have a deep v in the middle where it bolts to the tripple. It's no problem bolting up just drill two holes and trim some off the back,. The fender looks killer with a Polisport halo headlight. see if i can get a pic on here.

The frame is a charcole color. It's Duplicolor wheel paint. I've done three frames in this color and paint. It seems to hold up pretty good.

Like the updated red fender. Better picture please!?
When I put the update crf fender on my other bike I used 4 holes. Dremeled them so they would fit my 2005 crf450x fork bolt mounts.

LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING! This time I got burned.

In the past 20 years I've bought many, many, many used bikes. I've even bought a couple with only pics over the internet. But this is the first time that I feel like I got burned. The pics, first post above, looked really clean of this bike. It wasn't and is NOT clean. I should've asked more questions. Oh well...I was going to tear it down anyways and fix it up. Guess I grossly overpaid and have alot more work than I thought. I'll let the pics speak volumes:

After removing panels: airbox, busted and a crappy fiberglass repair job!
Posted Image

Airbox full of grease and dirt and even a dead cricket.
Posted Image

Apparently the result of a dirty, greasy airbox is this.
Posted Image

The guy said it was plated/street legal. This is what was under the new rear taillight. No bulb or housing for it, just snipped wires.
Posted Image

Here's how the taillight bulb was held. Notice the wood screw!
Posted Image

Cracked subframe bracing.
Posted Image

What looked like fresh plastics and tank were....a cobby spray can job!!! The sidepanels were junk, cracked and roadrashed.
Posted Image

I have no idea why there are multiple washers in here. Can someone help me and tell me what and how the footpeg mount she be mounted? I know washers should be there!

Pissed and wanting to repair and fix everything before my wife realizes how I got burned I started stripping here down.
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Additional list of problems:
clutch cable about to snap.
controls and levers shot!
rear shock has zero rebound or compression
both wheels feel as though their bearings are jacked.
slightly bend subframe
handlebars junk.
White bros slipon junk: cracked mount, rivets falling out, can vibrates it's so loose.
Header junk.

basically completely hammered!. The thing looked like it had never been washed.

At least it runs. I started it and took it for a spin before taking it apart.

Washers should not be there. The dishonest seller you bought it from probably put them there to keep the kickstarter from hitting the peg bracket(notice gouges on the kickstarter). That means the bracket is probably bent. The rear bolt definitely is not original and it's probably not a grade 10.9, either.

Mine is original:

Yep no gouges on kickstarter! Ok will check bracket for being bent.
Can you give me a more straight on pic of your mount holes? I want to see if the frame on mine where the foot bracket bolts into is slightly bent.

UPDATES:
Yes bracket slightly bent but wow...82 bucks for a new one!!!!? Guess I'll have to make do. The bolt is a 8.8, do I really need the 10.9?

Look on the bright side... it might be cheaper to rebuild than buying a new (8900.00) bike?
And last twice as long!

1.) Straight-on in what way? The one I posted is about as clean as possible without taking parts off the bike. Hopefully these will help:

That's the difference between an SAE grade 5(general purpose) and grade 8(high strength). I would rather break the bike's frame over part my body from a failed footpeg bolt.

That's a good pic for later reference but what i"m looking for is similiar to the pic angle I took where it shows my washers. If you look at my pic there is the crease and rusted area in front of the front bolt mount. Is that supposed to be there, the indentation? In your first pic the skidplate is covering the little area I wanted to see.

Spent this past week doing a few fixers on the project. Stripped all the krylon spray paint off the gas tank. Adjusted valves and applied a wrinkle coat finish to the valve cover.

Still waiting on the Ohlins triple clamp mod to get done on the frame and then send it out to powder coating. I've pretty much bought everything I needed to put her back together including: new plastics and graphics, chain...etc.

Anodized engine plugs.
