If you were to make longer linkage "dog bones" you would be lowering the rear of the bike.

How? My Dad has been a machanic all his life and he is telling me to make them longer. Resulting in a higher rear. Explain.

It has to do with the way the links operate, they are in a fulcrum on the swingarm. Take a look at this website, it kind of explains it a bit with pictures.

If you don't believe me, just put your bike on a stand and remove the top or bottom bolt from your links. Then extend the space about an inch and see if longer links would raise or lower your bike.
