I have an 01 dr650 and I am doing a motard conversion to it. The stock seat is absolutely awful if you ever plan on riding more than an hour, and I'm not even a big guy. Any suggestions?

procycle and keintech have a couple aftermarket versions. I was thinking of asking a local upholstry shop to modify a stock seat and do a custom cover. seems like that could be comparable in cost to a ready made aftermarket seat. I was also thinking of getting a book on upholstry and trying it myself. how hard could it be? I have an old sewing machine in the attic i could dig out. the seat on my bike is kinda trashed and ready for some sort of restoration.

DIY really is not that difficult - the most important thing is to make the seat wider a bit further back and to use stiffer foam. I referred to http://www.diymotorcycleseat.com and did this http://drriders.com/topic1738.html

Not the cheapest option, but I wouldnt trade my suede top Renazco for anything...fits like a broken in pair of shoes.

I put the Seat Concept seat on my 06 Dr650 and love it. Best $159 bucks spent so far. Why pay more.

I had Fisher custom build a seat for me. Check out their site, look at their information sheet and their order form, they ask specific questions about your seating postion, and other pertinent information like how much riding you do standing on the pegs. I have read numerous threads concerning how so and so's seat is comfortable to sit on but it makes standing on the pegs uncomfortable because the seat is too wide near the front. Fisher will custom tailor the width of the seat and how far forward the extra width starts. They also offer a few foam densities to choose from. Cheaper than most complete seat assemblies and a little more than the "one seat fits all" seat kits out there. They did a great job on mine. Nate took a lot of time getting all the information he needed to get the best possible result for me. I'm real happy with the work they did.

Took mine a step farther and sculpted the seat to fit my butt. A drywall rasp file and some alligator skin (kayakers secert tool to shape foam braces in boats) plus several hours of work gave me a lowered and more comfortable ride. Cover still fit good although had some material to trim after stapling.
Look how chairs are shaped or old tractor seats, shaped like us, sure don't ever want to meet the guy who's posterior they use to make modern M/C seats. LOL.

Haha very true. I mostly do street riding. If any trail riding at all. I am most likely going to be putting street tires on it this spring. I just want something that wont kill me after riding for 5 hours up north.

I agree with foxfire my renazco seat is by far the best upgrade I've done to my 07 DR. Three to four hundred mile days are now possible and it looks and fits great

It was i believe about $375.00. I bought the bike in late 09 and I've put about 27,500 miles on it this far. It's mix of hard off road and pavement.

It was worth every penny. The seat was a needed mod, but I couldn't stop there. I did a pumper carb, rack, FMF can and power bomb header, plus several wind shields, Courtech tri-bags, Racetech suspension re-valving and springs front and rear, extra wheels, blah blah blah ..........its a sickness!

Good Day

I would recomend Seargent as a seat replacement, I have had mine for over a year now and I love it more
every time I go for a ride.

Take Care

Great. I will probably want to spend somewhere around 150-200 at the most. Gotta pay off college too!

If you're looking for something to make your ride a bit more comfortable, take a look at Sweet Cheeks. I was a doubter until I read the Mobius thread on ADV Rider.....Dr Roc and his significant other have ridden many thousands of miles, freeway, TAT, forest roads, you name it, using the Sweet Cheeks. As a bonus you can drain the soda out of the bottles and fill then with gas.....4 liters will get you a ways down the road. I personally bought a couple of Kleen Kanteen's in 64 oz to give a try....they fit great. To make my ride a little more plush, I just ordered a Cabelas pad that is sorta like the air hawk....might just work and if it does, $23 is a bunch better than $175 for an air hawk.

I've had a Sargent seat for two years now and it's pretty darn good. I would have went with the Renazco but it was a bit more money and time to build it.
