Need some help on a not-so-urgent issue.

My bike starts pretty easily when using the electric start (50 deg. F, full choke.) I run the bike for about 45 seconds with full choke and then no choke and it usually idles around 1400 rpm.

When I approach my bike under the same conditions and try using the kick start, it takes probably 20 kicks or so until it starts. It seems a little much to me for one of these bikes. What can/should I do to get it to start at 2-3 kicks? Is it a modification or technique issue??

It's got the original carb, jet kit, fmf muffler, stock header, no airbox lid, sea level, mixture screw 1 turn out, 38 pilot, what else do you need to know?

Thanks,

Jon

The jetting helps but the bike is hard starting cold. Either tip the bike to one side to flood the carb or drill out the enrichment jet in the carb. I Had a hard start cold problem on mine (before the pumper carb was installed), I leaned the bike over to one side till fuel ran out the carb vent and it started everytime cold. The best way to fix it is to remove carb and drill out the enrichment jet, it is too small and too lean for cold starts.

Seeing as how it's just a smaller bore than the KLX300 that I own, it probably starts the same as one of those. You have to get the kick lever past top dead center at just the right spot before giving the boot, otherwise you can kick away at it all day without getting it to fire up. Takes a little practice to find the "sweet" spot.

My 1999 KLX300 bump starts and runs ok but can't get her to kick start for the life of me...Any help out there?...The valve shims are all with in spec...All stock...Butt plug removed...Air box top off...Sea level...No smoke at all when running so I guess she's running lean...
