I know this may be a stupid question for some of you but I am going to ask it any way (no such thing as a stupid question right :bonk:)

Anyway, what is a "wiper" when it comes to fork seals. Is that the dust seal? I was looking at a seal set made by pivot works on Rockymountainmc.com for my 05 450 and it says that it includes a pair of Fork seals, wipers, and inner and outer bushings. it is $67 plus tax and shipping since I live in utah. I can get a pair of OEM dust seals, fork seals, and inner and outer bushings for about $45 + shipping from cycle central powersports. Would this include the same parts?

Second question, would the pivot works be a higher quality to justify paying more? OEM has been good stuff in my bike so far would there by any reason to change?

Yeah I'm pretty sure that should be the same thing, it just depends on where your from as to what you call it.

A wiper is the dust seal. from my own personal experience i would stick with the oem seals, eventhough you get bushings with pivot works. I used a set of pivot works a couple years ago and was not happy with the quality of the bushings/seals. Oem is by far a better quality seal.

Thanks guys. Just wanted to confirm what I was thinking. It is better to ask before ordering parts then order them and find out you ordered the wrong parts. I am going to stick to OEM, especially when it is cheaper.

Agree, I used pivot works fork kit and they leaked from day one...and I was very careful not to tear the seals. Just used oem ones, and they don't leak a drop. And all you get in pivot works kit is upper lower bushing ands oil and dust seals. Might wanna tear em apart and then order your parts..there are a few orings you might need to replace.

pivot works kits work fine. are they as good as oem? that's debateable. if yours leaked from day one then you either tore them or installed them backwards, which is very easy to do i've done it myself.

i will never.. EVER.. buy any aftermarket fork seals again. NEVER. Friggin pivot works are leaking after a short time on my 04, mind you I have 1000hrs on this bike, internal bushings/seals/etc. have been replaced multiple times. I never had a honda OEM seal leak, i wore bushings out before the seals ever had a chance to leak. LAst build we were in more of a hurry, so went with the full "pivot NOT-works" kit.. I'm only one example, and many may have had good luck, but i will be buying OEM honda seals from now on.

I recommend getting a set of fork bleeders from Motion Pro for 15-20 bucks it helps relieve the pressure in the forks that cause them to leak seal savers also help to keep out the dirt also another cause of leakage should help to keep up with the problem till your next fork service works on all my hondas oem in my opinion is better and cheaper get most everything from service honda

Out of curiosity, which way should the spring face on the Pivot Works oil seals? Does the spring face up (towards the handle bars) or down (facing the axel and visible when you remove the dust seal? I ask becuase I just installed a set up bushings and seals and they started leaking after one ride. All Pivot Works will tell me is I installed them incorrectly. I'm not saying I did ot didn't, but just looking for clarity.

Thanks!

Springs always face towards the oil on the fork seals, or at least all that I have seen do. In short up towards the handlebars.

It's a common misconception that built up pressure causes fork seals to leak. Pressure actually increases the clamping force of the seal on the stanction tube.

Dirt trapped inside the seals is what makes them leak. If you want to prevent fork seal leaks, stay out of the mud.

As far as parts go, it's rare to find an aftermarket part that is better than OEM Honda.

This is opposite of what I have found when changing seals in the past, and I also just got confrirmation from Pivit Works that the spring on the oil seal should be facing down towards the axel, just like the dust seal.

That's incorrect. The spring faces out on the dust seal, and in on the oil seal.

I believe the "oil seal" (not the dust seal) on the Honda has two springs one on the outside and one on the inside. Therefore to avoid confusion the letters "Pivot Works" should be visable from the outside of the fork. If you cant read "Pivot Works" on the seal then you have them installed backwards. If this simple fundemental concepts of fork rebuilding has to be asked - then how many other things are "screwed up" in your forks after the rebuild! Wow!

Doesnt matter the concept is the same the markings need to be on the outside! Maybe that went over your head!

Wow, this is a forum where people can ask for advice or look up certain issues they are having. Not a place to overcompensate. I just rebuilt my forks...there is one spring on the oil seal it faces up...look in the manual.

Over my head?

I've been working on bikes for 40 years. When you say "the Honda oil seal has two springs one on the outside and one on the inside", it's obvious you don't know what the hello you are talking about.

Fork seals, regardless of brand, contain one spring and they always face the spring inside towards the wet side.

What is this:

http://www.pivotwork...px?item_id=1198

Fits the 2009 - 2010 Honda CRF 450R. As you can plainly see it is an oil seal with an outer spring.
