Stripped out the tranny oil check bolt on my 04' night before a race. Shoved the bolt back in and threw Marine Goop over it and it held up to 80 miles of abuse no leaks no issues. Impressive stuff.

But now I need to fix it permanently. What is the best avenue? Heli Coil? JB weld it shut? Tap it for a bigger bolt?

I plan to no longer use it and just use the measuring method from now on.

JB weld it shut. Remove the cover from the bike and thoroughly degrease it. Then tape/plug the hole in the back and pour the JB weld in bolt hole from the front until it is full.

.. but if you take the time to get the cover of the bike and jbweld it closed, why not just tap it for a slightly larger screw and crush washer?? Sounds like the present fix isn't working too bad for quick-n-easy..

Two reasons. First, you should not rely on the check hole to determine the oil level because it's very easy to end up with insufficient oil. Oil should always be added by a measured quantity.

Second, a normal tapered tap will not work in the hole because of the way the cover is cast in back. The hole has an end that stops the tap and prevents it from going all the way in.

When it gets stripped out, the best thing to do is to seal the hole shut and forget that it ever existed.
