My fault your right on the pe 175 it is not street legal I got some wrong information. Thanks for the list ill be looking furiously, im trying to find a bike for around campus and the local area and id rather have a bike than a moped; I wish I had the cash for a ysr 50, or a gsxr 50 (very rare, didnt even know they made/imported them).

yeah your best bet for a cheap easy to find bike would prbably be the dt or xl series those tend to be popular around here not sure about where you live though the dts are real nice my dad has a dt250 and its a great little around town runner

I wouldn't consider the YSR to be a dirt bike. Now if you're looking for street legal 50cc bikes, I'm guessing to bypass or comply (not sure about CA laws) street licensing, I've got a soft spot for the GPR made by Derbi. They only imported them for a handful of years stopping in 2005 right before those damn-it-so-much Chinese scooters became popular.
There's also the Aprilla RS50, Yamaha TZR (like YSR) and Rieju RS1 & RS2, although I'm not sure how many of those made it here. There is a heck of a lot more of these bikes available in CA from what I can tell from CL than there are anywhere else, save for FL.
License, no license, 50cc or 1300cc, I strongly encourage you to take the MSF course before you get a bike. This will teach you things that will help keep you three dimensional and shiny side up.

Also, the XL and XR are essentially the same, buy a non-running XL with papers and an XR, put the running XR motor in the XL, ride happy.

I realize my list isn't all vintage, but I've got a feeling you're looking for transportation in style.

Good luck.

Yeah the ysr is more of a street bike, but I sure as hell wouldnt mind one. I just want some transportation and its between a moped and riding in style right now. Ill definitely be searching for the bikes mentioned above. The only problem is im on a very tight budget, and I dont want to big of a project because im already in the middle of another project. Im from california but I go to school in Texas, so im hoping to find something in the area right now; but I may have to find something in Cali and have a friend or family buy it and ill bring it down when I can.

California laws are really weird. Almost any bike older than 1978 can be registered on the street. All the DMV cares about is the smog requirements.

HOWEVER, you are now fair game for the CHP and LEO's to ticket you for anything that is non-compliant! And tickets = money. The downside of registering a dirt bike is the cost of adding lights and other street gear. I just mention this to broaden your search a bit.

A YSR50 just seems like a cop magnet. It might fail on some other restrictions. And you are not going to ride more than a mile without hating life.

There are parts everywhere for Honda 50cc to 125cc engines. Many parts are still being made.

2-strokes are easy repair, but some parts for the older bikes are getting hard to find. I saw a great deal on a used Honda 2-stroke, but it needed a piston and those can be hard to find for that model.

Start searching Craigslist and researching what you find. Lots of good deals. Lots of old turds that need to be recycled.

Eligibility for on-highway registration

To be eligible for on-highway registration, 1978 year model and newer off-highway vehicles with an engine size of 50 cubic centimeters (cc) or larger must have an emission label affixed to the vehicle indicating certification by the manufacturer for on-highway use.

Exception: 2005 year model or older motorcycles with an engine size of 50 cc or less are exempt from the emission label requirements.

They're sweet lookin' ain't they? A grand is pretty good, most of the ones out here are going for more than MSRP.
For transportation, the KE100 is an awesome deal. They retailed for under two grand and you can pick them up (here anyway) for $500-800 in perfect working order. They'll do 70 in stock form, downhill, with a tail wind riding like this:

I bet if he shaved his back, he could have hit 160mph.
But with me on it, it would do 60 except for long steep uphill climbs. The girlfriend had much better success since she's smaller, lighter and more aerodynamic (narrower shoulders, speed humps to break the air, etc.). They're already street legal, although lighting is lacking - the lights dim at idle if you step on the brake or the blinkers won't work, ok above idle though.
It is not a highway bike by any means and honestly feels like riding a bicycle with a chainsaw motor.

Since your range is Texas and Cali, I think you should be able to find one without much problem.

Thanks guys ive been searching furiously for a while now and not much is coming up. A few decent mopeds have, and a local guy selling a dt50, but he takes a long time to respond emails and hasnt emailed me back in a few days.

Find a Dt 250 they are usually cheap and parts are plentiful. Of course with the two stroke your mpg sucks. I don't see too many older xl 250's and I beleive parts are significantly more for them than the yamaha counterpart.

Theres only one dt 250 on the craigslist around me and its $1500. Its ridiculous and it seems like no one puts phone numbers in their ads now a days, which makes it impossible to reach them. If I could get a hold of a 50-100cc running bike for cheap that would be perfect.
