The Mega and Ultra Series start soon and I want to try to race this year. I never have before and would be racing 250D. Any advice on which track to try first? My options are Muddy Creek, Top Gun, Iron City, and Windy Hill. I'm thinking MC or Windy Hill.

I just want to try to go to one that's less crowded and less technical for my very first race to see what it's like. If I like the first one, I will probably go to many of them.

I haven't been to Muddy Creek in 16 years but I would be willing to bet the crowd would be bigger there than at Windy Hill. Both tracks are fun. Windy Hill just rebuilt their track so I don't know what it's like now but it's sandy. Personally I'd just go to which ever one is closest.

MC is always crowded when the Ultra Series rolls in but then again there all crowded. Windy Hill is Sandy and gets rough and choppy quick with that amount of riders (always alot of crashing) but it's still a good time. I say just pick one and go get your feet wet. I will say my favorite track on that series is Top Gun (hint hint).

I think Muddy Creek is the best track of the series but at times could be intimidating to a beginner. Historically the first race has the most entries. A few years ago I remember there were 89 riders in 250C. But of corse that was before the downturn in economy and before Sam increased entry fees 20%. Either way if you go to M/C you won't have to wait so long! Just get out and have fun! Good luck to you!

So does it really even matter? None of them look really technical or anything. I live in Hendersonville and Muddy Creek or Top Gun would probably be the closest. I just don't want to go out there and be intimidated by going to the hardest or most crowded place. I'll probably end up going to Muddy Creek either way though.

the victory sports ultra series is coming to cathy's creek for a few races this year, thats probably a little closer to you than muddy creek. it seems like a pretty good track too, I'm planning on racing some too, gotta decide on 250C or 250D I hate thinkin of myself in the "beginner" class I've been riding for quite a while but havent done much racing. I've raced 2x in 250D indoors and got an 8th and 2nd but I'm better outdoors than the small tracks so I'm kinda leaning towards 250C but I guess I need to decide by the indoor round this weekend cause once you go up you cant go back down. since I wont be racing for points I might just race D until I get moved up havent decided yet, but dont want to be that sandbagging guy, there are too many of them out there. So if I do race D I might end up racing you at some point. just pick a race and have fun with it.

If you haven't race'd much I'd say run the D class until they move you up. The Ultra Series D class is fast but I applaud them for the system they have in place for moving riders up. You won't find that in many places.

Haha, I also thought about racing 250C because I'm a decent rider and half of the D riders pile up in the first corner. I have never raced before though so I decided to stick with 250D to start with. Any tips on avoiding crashing in the first corner?

haha I should have taken the advice of sticking to D class, I raced 250C and Unlimited C this weekend. I rode horrible...lol. the whoops are really what killed me the most. My 250 qualifying heat I got 12th after a horrible start and riding crazy tight (nerves) luckily that was just for gate pick. well my Unlimited C qualifier only took top 6 to the main the rest to the LCQ, I had in my mind on the gate to just relax and ride, well, my front tire was too close to the gate (only the 2nd time on a starting gate in 3.5 years) I was determined to get a better start, the card goes sideways I see the gate twitch and BOOM the next thing I know I'm hips against the bars lol NOOOOO well my pants get hung on my shrouds underneath the bike I get up and take off on a mission, and actually rode pretty good, I caught and passed a few people and got 11th or 12th and a trip to the LCQ. I was happy with how I rode after I got going to all I needed now was a start. LCQ time comes around I get back off the gate a little more and the gate drops and I get a great jump off the gate I was side by side for the holeshot going into the first turn I'm headed for the berm and I feel something hit y back wheel and slow me down then someone comes up from the outside and hooks my handlebars and takes me down, I get up and the a guys bike is on mine, he picks it up and spins across my handlebars, I get my bike up and kick it and the throttle cable was kinked wide open. so that was the end of my unlimited class for the night. So I decided to just focus on my 250C main. I was stuck outside with a crappy gate pick but still got a decent jump on the start of the main head into the whoops in the top 5 or so but get passed by a few riders on the way through but pass a few people that crashed along the way. I rode pretty decent until the 2nd to last lap and washed the front end in a turn, got pass by one person. Got up and finished the race feeling ok with what I thought was around a mid pack finish, go check results and it says I got dead last. I know I passed a few guys that were crashed and only got passed by one person after the frist lap when I crashed towards the end. maybe they dont pay as much attention when keeping up with people in the back half of the field or maybe they got me mixed up with the other #620 who was on a suzuki I don;t know my slash through my number wasnt really easy to see from a distance. but oh well it is what it is I came away safe and had fun and know that I need to get my but on some more tracks and practice if I want to get to the front, I like the challenge ahead of me. I had fun but I think I could have brought home a top 3 or so if I would have raced the D class but its about the fun not the plaques. I guess maybe jwoodruff07 I'll see you once you point out of the D class :smirk: . As for not getting in the first turn pile ups, they happen in the C class too, either get a great jump or get caught in the gate and let everyone be half a lap ahead before you take off thats the easiest way to avoid it :bonk:

Just for practice? There's Lakeside in Taylors, SC. There's also Matt Hamilton's and Silver Creek. Silver Creek is in Morganton. They are the closest. You have to look up Silver Creek on facebook if you have one. I don't know how to contact Matt Hamilton, and Lakeside's website is lakesidemx.net.

My 11 year old is looking to get into a series (first time racer). Is there one you guys could recommend? We are in Mooresville, NC about twenty miles north of Charlotte.

Thanks

I'm not sure, you might want an answer from some of the other guys but there's 2 around WNC that I know of. The Mega Series and the Ultra Series run at places like Muddy Creek (in Tennessee), Top Gun (towards you guys?), and Iron City (in SC). They go a few other places too but you can go on Victory Sport's website and look.
