i have a 1997 xr4 that was dual sported in CA around 2003 / 2004... i believe that the PO used a complete baja designs classic DS kit... i have a small AA battery pack under the seat, turn signals, headlight, horn etc... the bike is a plated CA xr400...

my limited knowledge of wiring tells me that it s not as simple as replacing the old style flush mount turn signals and brake light with LEDs... is it even possible to hook up LEDs to the classic system ?? does anyone know what parts i may need ??

also the battery is a 12 cell ni-cd... it s pretty toasted... is it ok to replace the pack with a ni-mh 12 cell AA pack (2300maH) ??

thanks for any suggestions..

cheers

it pretty much is that simple. replace the signals with LED units. The only other thing you will need is a electrical turn signal flasher. find out if it is a 2 or 3 prong thermal flasher unit and replace it with one from your local parts store. Even if it is round vs square, use a zip tie to secure it.

thanks jjrace... my flasher unit is a 2 prong round model... zip tied to the baja designs headlight numberplate combo... so will a rear LED tail light just hook up ??

rear LED tail light is just PNP.

Like I said for the turn signals, just get an electronic flasher at the autoparts store. About $10.

I like using the LEDs in my bikes especially on the dual sports like my 86xl250r cause they are brighter than stock and draw less amps. Need to get the stator rewound here some day.

The LED tail light should work fine off the battery's DC power. I've even run a few LED tails off the engine's AC and they worked, but didn't seem to last super long. As far as the battery, I'd ask BD. They are pretty active in this forum, you could PM them or just call them. BD products are top notch, I've been very happy with their kits since the early '90s when they were the only one's out there, and regretted buying a couple lesser quality kits. You get what you pay for.

seems as though a ni-mh 10 cell battery will be ok... sicassracing.com sells a 3700 maH ni-mh battery (for 60 bucks)... i reckon it ll be ok to replace the ni-cd with a ni-mh... gonna build one up from energiser AA's... i m liking some of the sicass LED's...

I have a 1998 plated XR400, and used the baja designs (really Acerbis I think) rear LED brakelight with no problems. much cleaner set up and brighter light yes it is plug and play. BD sells their battery for about $40 I think, Just replaced the original one on mine for the 1st time, and added a power supply / outlet off the battery to run the GPS from.
I need to get a new Hi/Low beam, Horn, Turn signal switch. Hi beam button broke off.

No I left them as regular old stylin' bulbs, I have Quasi-legal (Not really wide enough) low profile ones on the rear and nice short stalks tucked in on the front, I have yet to break one off. And I drop it a fair amount.
BUT... If I actualy rode it on the street, a lot, I would go for the brightest bulbs possible. It never amazes me how friggin' blind people are.

Add the LED's one at a time, the polarity has to be correct with LED's. If you add them all at one time and they don't work it will take forever to fix. Check each turnsignal as you add it.
