Anyone familiar with the trails at Brushy Moutain? Thinking of taking a trip there this winter from Pa. 8 hour drive, want to make sure its worth it. I like the idea of the single track trails. Been to Hatfields twice, Trails there are ok but i dont like 2 direction trails and all the dirt roads needed to ride to get to the single track. Plus the weather gets better the further south we go!

Yeh! Brushy Mtn. is AWSOME!! David Knight use to go there (or may still go there) to get practice on there single track trails. Some of Brushy's ST is pretty hard stuff. The only down part about Brushy is they close if there is a lot of rain in the days prior to you going. Make sure you look at the weather and call about trail conditions before you go! If you like good trails and some hard ST, then Brushy is where ya need to be!

Thanks for the info. Sounds promising. I will have to roll the dice on the weather unfortunately. Its hard to plan a 4 day trip 8 hours away at the last minute. Was planning on renting a cabin near by, any suggestions?

Dunno about cabin rentals near there, but Brushy does allow camping. The closest big city for hotels would be Hickory. If ya'll do make the trip all the way down and then can't ride because of rain go to Brown Mtn. That place is actually better to ride at when it's wet and still have good trails! Just make sure Brown is open cause they do shut down from like Jan. til i think March for trail maintenance. Double check dates on that though cause i could be wrong on when Brown Mtn. shuts down

NO!!! Brushy is much better then Brown IMO, but Brown is still good and worth going to especially if you're driving all the way down here to ride and can't ride Brushy due to rain.

Can't find a website for Brown, but just google "brown mtn. atv riding trails" Brown Mtn. is located near Morganton, NC

tbd,
Brown and Brushy are good spots. I've rode both several times over the last several years. Stay in Hickory at Best Western (If Roy is on here he can hook you up with a good rate and make you an instant cousin of his - I am)
Most of the NC guys would probaly ride with you if you post up enough info and they are awesome at showing you around and even helping if trail trouble arrives.

I live east of both locations (Mooresville) and have ridden Brushy several times and Brown once, right before Christmas. Brown is a much better place to ride when wet, the soil is more loamy and less red clay and also rockier. Brushy is very tough if its very wet, lots of red clay and roots. I lived in PA for a few years so I know you all dont have red clay up there, its no fun when wet. Brown was a blast and I was with Garrett and Jay who I met on TT. It has some pretty technical stuff but it was a ball. I believe Brown is closed now through March. Brushy will be closed if its very wet. I'm glad they do that, it saves the trails from getting the crap beat out of them.

As a backup you might consider Carolina Adventure World in Winnsboro, SC. About an hour south of Charlotte. You wil see a lot of four wheelers but they also have quite a few miles of bike only single track. They've got a flat track, dirt drag strip etc, pretty fun. I've also ridden alot at TNT Motorsports which is in Chester, SC. Trails are nice, good shape generally they just dont have a lot of them. They do have a couple of excellent MX tracks and some smaller tracks for non MX guys like me.

Good Luck!

You do not want to go Carolina adventure world if ST is your thing, they have very little and it sucks. Why does everybody keep talking about Brown it will be closed.
Brushy is great and has great ST that is very well marked. Post up here if your looking for a guide, but really you wont need one imo, plus Richard(owner) can hook you up with directions or a guide, when you get their. they have a grill and showers

You are correct...Brown is closed till April!!! Maybe another time. And we do have some clay here in Pa. It is slick as ice when wet. We have lots of rock and gravel at the trails I ride here in Pa. Check out Marienville and Rocky Gap. Both in North West Pa. Both state run in a national forest. Great trails. Actually the trails are better when wet.(isnt everything!) Better traction and no dust!!!!!! Thankfully I have brand new rubber on my sled. That may help if it gets slick......I rode at Wayne National Forest in November. It was dry but i bet its slick as snot if it gets wet. Thanks for all the info fellow riders. Keep it coming!

I would agree with you 99% of the time that the wet makes it more fun and a joy to ride, but take my word for it on YOU DO NOT WANNA RIDE BRUSHY'S SINGLE TRACK in the wet unless your an excellent or pro rider! Brushy's ST is tricky enough when it's dry, but when it's wet some of their ST can be damn near impossible! Goat trail in the wet anyone!? lol

We will just have to wait and see what happens with the weather. If it is too wet....we will just hit the dual use trails. Which im not opposed too. All the trails I ride here in Pa. are dual use. They are labled dual use, however some of them are more technical than others. The best part is that they are directional. No chance of a head on collision. There is an 11 mile loop that we ride alot that is dual use. Ive seen everything from kids on minis to big utility quads. The good thing about it is that you can go as slow as you want or as fast. Takes us about 35 or 40 minutes to do the loop. Basically its almost a single lap moto. Its all fun. I would recommend it to any one. there are just a few tricky sections but not inpassable. Hatfields is similar. Even the trails rated difficult are 3 miles of easy trail with a small section that is difficult. Its fine with me. I just didnt like the 40 foot wide dirt roads and non directional trails. Im looking forward to riding there, rain or not!

if your bringing kids make sure to check the rulz on their websight. Like skidad said before make sure your brake bads and tire are fresh. One of the best long routes for hitting all the st in on econstant loop with a hardly any open stuff is 9, 10, 11, 2b, 5b, enduro, this is a great loop and about 20ish miles of mainly st their is also the goat hill wich is great as well. Their are a lot evelvation changes, and very technical riding enjoy and let us know when your going. The enduro being the longest and very technical has many bailout sections for people that get in over their head or are just plain tired.

No kids. Just some 40 year olds that act like kids!!! We are heading down on March 16th. Planning on riding the 17th 18th and 19th. Hope to see some other folks there and hit the trails. Always welcome others to ride with. especially locals that know their way around.

Too wet????? We will see. The weather is the only thing I dont hve some control over, so Im not going to worry about it or plan for it till then. One year on our trip to Hatfields, we got caught in a microburst while riding at the top of a mountain near one of the camp sites. Never seen anything like it. Wind was blowing up! Literally had to lay down with the bike next to a berm till it passed... Rain is nothing.

No kidding there, no fun at all. I'm not pro or expert level but am no slouch and I'd rather just not ride than ride Brushy wet!

I have to disagree, it doesnt suck. The outer loop is bike only and I would consider it decent ST with varying degrees of difficulty and its several miles. Some of the tougher bike/atv trails dont get a lot of atv traffic and they are fast. The two big hill climbs are fun and very tough. Grizzly hill or whatever its called is super tough, dont see many people make it up that one. Anyway, just my humble opinion, I've ridden everything around the area that I know of. Brushy is probably my favorite, when not soaked!
