May be if you ride the euro trash as a "weekend warrior", and never hit the rev limiter, they are just fine and last forever. But ridden them in the amateur and pro motocross circuit like my 2 kids have and wrenching them for over 10 years, from 80cc, 125cc, and 250 Fs,  from KTM, TM, Kawis, Yamahas, and for the past 6 years Hondas. I can tell you that the jap stuff was superior specially Hondas, right out of the box. The eurocrap was unreliable and parts sometimes unavailable, may be KTM is gotten better but not when we were racing. Hell, I saw more championships ruined because of KTMs breaking, only the factory suported riders doing OK. BTW, as a consulting engineer I own a company,  and can buy whatever bike I want.  May be you should save your pennies to keep running your eurotrash, you will definitely need the money. Unless off course you are a "weekend warrior", then you can just play your guitar and pass gas.

The DRZ is fine , it just needs suspension upgrades to get the best out of it

I have a 97' CR250, 92' KX500, 10' KX450F all mint and Love all my bikes as they all have a purpose. Just picked up a '02 KTM 520 (not running) rebuilt completely (suspension, engine, electric, etc...) and by far is the best, most fun, well engineered bike i've ever bought. I can come home stressed from work, go into the shop, start up the KTM, rip right out from the house (yeah it's street legal), ride down to the track, click up the suspension and tear it up. KTM ROCKS!!! sooo satisfying.. ;)

I will admit that the bike when it comes to engineering does seem a little over engineered hear and there but that's all part of knowing your bike and after you ride it for a while you understand the reasons some of the things they do. :ride:

Hello everyone, just joined figured I'd say hello. But I have a question, I know there're other posts about this, but none that fully answer my question. So I'm looking at purchasing a dual sport, although I'm torn between the Kawasaki klr 650, and the Suzuki dr-z400, I've read that the klr is better on the highway, and the drz is better offroad. This is my first motorcycle (although I have experience with dirtbikes) and I don't know if 650 would be to big for a starter bike, but at the same time I'm 6' 7" 300lbs and I don't know if the drz 400 would be big enough frame wise, I've heard they are more suited for small-normal sized riders. It would mostly be used for commuting, around town, and offroad on the weekends. So what does everyone thing would be the better first bike?

I'm 6-5 235 and am enjoying my DRZ400S from trails to highway...its fun on the interstate also but guzzles the gas above 70mph.

Here’s my advice join an off road club ride as many bikes in the club as possible then decide because those two bikes your looking at are a piece of crap!

OP~
Because of your size and previous dirtbike experience, I'd say either the Triumph 800 Tiger XC if you do a fair amount of street work, or a KTM 500 (plated) if it's mostly dirtwork you will do.
