You are right, but for the average rider, it's a non issue. I could probably go 0-60 in 6th gear without cooking the clutch on my bike, although it would cause a lot of unnecessary wear. My car on the other hand (which is relatively torqueless and makes peak power at 8500rpm, same as my bike) would be filled with smoke and rolling backwards down a hill if I tried that.

BTW, if this is an air cooled bike, you are worried about the clutch/heat and wish to extend oil change intervals a little longer than you normally would offroad, installing an oil cooler could be a worthy investment. Not sure how difficult or expensive it would be, but I'm sure it's possible.

I guess I should have added that using it "within reason" will not burn it up, but I'm trying to learn how to reduce my long winded explanations. :smirk:

I was thinking along the lines of the time frame for burning up a dry clutch in a VW Vanagon Syncro...   Which my friend just did a few months ago.. in this video that I made:  What looks like dust in the title thumbnail for the video and starting at apx 9:13 minutes into the video and ending at 10:00 minutes is actually clutch smoke!!!

Amazingly enough, for  two more hours of 4x4 trail riding we didn't know the clutch was fried until we hit the highway and he reved it up for a shift to second gear...   that is when the disk turned to powder.. and he had to shift with no clutch from then in Oregon and all the way home to Duvall, Washington :bonk:  See below.

Similar to:  "your tire will not blow up or disintegrate if you peel out"   but then I see guys on video purposely doing burn-outs to total destruction in a contest and actually buying tires that will burn better..

Sounds like you might have the same daily driver as I do.. :smirk:  Could that possibly be a Honda S2000  ???   :bonk:

My other 2 vehicles are both VW Vanagon Syncros (full campers).

Close and I wish, it's an 06 Si. Tuned it with FlashPro, it's a set of cams, valvesprings and an oil pump away from hanging with an F series and outrevving my bike. I'd happily trade a rear seat for rear wheel drive though.

And yeah, that clutch is impressive, would make a good wall decoration. Short of doing that though, it's not hard to cause glazing or warp the flywheel from overheating. Get stuck behind a tractor going up a mountain at 5mph and you will find out what I mean. :bonk:

That reminds me... You could smell the Van from 50 feet away and later that night when going for the group dinner they had at the event, getting even within 20 feet of HIM reeked..  :smirk::bonk:

We thought that maybe a piece of the fiber on the disk had flaked off...  Man o Man did WE miss the mark!  As it turned out, it was the clutch debris that had packed up around the outer edge of the disk that kept us moving.

Happy to say, the Van is fixed.  But it sure did make the video more exciting..

well,  what im going to try is to change my front sprocket from a 15 to a 16,  that way 1st gear might be a bit better and i wont have to start off by going from 2nd gear.

Thanks for all the knowledge on here,  i truly appreciate it,  and will change my oil around 600 miles or so,  so the clutch and all have nice fresh oil,  ill be using MOBIL 1 full synthetic 20w-50,  since its a air cooled bike.
you might start bogging in 5th if you go up a sprocket in the front just take off in 2nd i take off in 3rd when its right

thanks,  i went to a 16t front sprocket instead of the stock 15t,  i still always start in 2nd gear on road now,  almost never in first anymore,  and it works out great,  i take all traffic from the line,  and doing 30 mph in no time,  no more 1st gear starts for me on road.
