I think that corrosion is somewhat normal. I clean mine with a dremel wire wheel. The small one.

Thanks, thats exactly what I did... came right off. Never would have thought of those little wire wheels until I saw that they were still in the case that I got wih the drill. Just used some wd-40 so the dust wouldnt fall into the cases, put a rag down there just in case though.

I changed my mind about the crank bearings, I think Im just going to leave them alone for another season. Got into the bottom end a little today and have to replace the shift shaft since its about 100% stripped and CS seal Its leaking pretty bad.

Any one have any idea what I need to replace if the kick start is slipping? Do I need to replace the whole gear mechanism or can I just replace the gear itself? Never had one do that before. I slips about every third kick for some reason...

Check the ratcheting peices that look like saw teeth.

Wait, didn't you do a lengthy write up on KTM's a few months ago?? Can't get away from the yz's:lol::ride:

Thanks... Ill check that out when I get a chance. Am I looking for sheared teeth, or misaligned gears or what?

Yea I did do a KTM comparisson but I cant find any in my area. The only KTM I would be comfortable purchasing is the new 12' 250SX with linkage. So this is the old 96 that I basically got for free in a trade that I ended up buying back with the cash he gave me for my bike. I figure Ill ride my 08 for one more season and go from there and start the search again next year. Ill buy a new bike when the right one comes around.

Got a few of my parts back from my buddy that he powder coated when he picked up my hubs today... cost me $20 to have all 5 parts done including all prep work.

Had both PV covers done, head, cs sprocket/ case saver and water pump cover. They came out awesome! He did a hell of a job getting these things smooth because they were absolutely jacked. There were a few very small areas around the bolt holes on the right side PV cover that the powder didnt stick to so I told him not to worry about it and Id just touch it up with some spray paint. Didnt want to over do anything since he did all this work for next to nothing.

Just a tease at what Im doing with the motor, I think the motor is gonna turn out pretty darn good if I do say so myself.

Check the closing stop for the power valve. It is part of the cover at the left end of the power valve and prevents it from rotating back too far. If it wears, it can allow the power valve to over-rotate in the low rpm (rest) position and hit the piston. It is an aluminum on aluminum stop that eventually gets beat down enough to allow the PV and piston to hit.

While you have the cases apart, matching the cylinder and cases is well worth the time investment.

The stop is in great condition. Honestly based on the amount of carbon and goop that was packed in both covers and all over the PV. I highly doubt it was moving its full range of motion anyways. These PV's are cylindrical in shape. I dont see any way that it could hit the piston, esp now that I cleaned them up. But I could be wrong.

Yes, that would be the only thing that I would think that could cause that. Missing a tooth or one rounded off maybe.

Trust me, I know how that goes. I've looked at the KTM's to, but I wouldn't want anything older than 2012.

That powdercoat looks good!! Going with a red with and black color scheme again?

Yea color scheme will stay the same... using sime plastics I already have. Just doing some "extra" stuff to the engine to give it a little personality. I wanna throw just a tad of red in there too, but dont know how to do it without over doing it... probably a few anodized bolts and some minor details. Whatever my buddy can help me out with to keep this thing as cheap as possible. It should look pretty sick when Im done with it.

Already ordered from motosport. Just saw them last night when I was browsing for anodized bolts. Wish I could find some red or white rad. hoses for a bike this old. I think white would look the best.

Thanks for the link... I think Ill grab some! $75 isnt too bad considering the cheap low quality chinese ebay kits are about $65.

I need opinions, what color should I go with? I dont want to over do it with the red, but Im afraid white will get stained up too easily. What do you guys think I should go with?

Gonna be a lot of black when Im done with it... thats why I wanna change it up a little. I think white would look the best but Im worried about keeping them clean. I guess it wouldnt be any harder than the white plastics.

Blue?? It wants to sport some of it's origins.

jk, I would go white. Bleach would probably clean them right up.

lol I would go blue but I already have too much invested in the white, black and red bling.

Im gonna go with white and hopefully they will stay clean if I just keep up with them.

Also Ive been looking for someone that sells black 50 tooth rear sprockets for a 96 but cant find one anywhere. Ive checked every site I could think of and no one offers color choices for anything other than 99+ with the new rear hub. If anyone has any leads for me could you let me know where I could find one.
