The spec sheet on Honda's site says it will have a WR 5 speed trans.

Well the eyesight is the "Second" thing to go with age.....
sigh

Never caught that, but have seen the spec sheet change over the past few....sometimes very sublte, and most often in the lack of information specifics.

I think you are right to question the specs. For example, do you think it will really have a 2.2 gal tank? That would be smaller than usual.

Hawaii-Rider.....
It will have the wide ratio trans, it will have the 2.2 gal tank, grrrrr...but about the time you can get one, IMS will have a big tank, it will weigh 232 lbs. with battery and the dealers will have them about Jan 15th.
You are going to like it, trust me.

I honestly have no question....I have owned almost every two wheel off road bike brand, and those I have not owned, ridden quite a bit. Montessa, Ossa, CZ/Jawa, Maico, early Husky (real ones) :D, twin carb PUch 250, Bultaco....yawn....
But of all the machines, the Hondas have always for some reason fit me and done me the best in terms of maintenance, ride, design etc. and the only thing that matters in this sport as most of us on TT practice it, had the most long term fun on that brand. Yeah, fine hairs, most of the bikes today are pretty freaqin awesome against any measure....cant loose on a one of them out there.

Wife gave the go ahead for any new bike I wanted.... :)
So.....
Jan 15th ......will that be it???

Smart enough to know if I dont keep her happy, HRs life can suck. :D
I call her "Chief of House"....
or....as all commanders vehicles have the number designation "6"...
A-6 for alpha company commander's vehicle for example...

she is Household 6.

Hows that?

Trust me, I could just go get without comms with the other half....but I have done dumber things...not many....but a few! :D

i'm laughing so hard that tears are forming.
my better half is called "the Head General". :)

so, are there any specs on exactly what ratios will be in the "X" model?
so we can compare to a wr for example.
the one big problem with the beer can frame is that eventually it WILL crack. aluminum don't bend. maybe you will notice and maybe not. i'd guess that no '97 cr makes it to 22 years like my '81yz125 has.

p.s. i'm not laughing at you, i'm laughing WITH you!

No specs on the internals....
but I know...
it will be lean as hell....(green sticker for the peoples republik of Ca...)
and that exhaust can is going to be quiet...but restrictive as the wifes wallet!
HR can get into both! :)

Oh...another "6"......

Thats pretty funny the quote about the beer can frame.Makes me laugh when I look at the very large pile of cracked and broken frames at the Honda/Yamaha shop I work at and all of them are Yamaha YZ and WR many of them have the front down tube completely separated just below the gusset on the steering head,I have seen 2 aluminun Honda frames crack since 97 but never a complete failure like the Yamahas.cheers :)

I notice on Honda's website they have some updated pics of the bike, and it says FEB. release. The silencer design looks kinda different...like maybe there's disks in it?? My other question is will the bike offer the same 742/756 tires as all the other CR/CRF's??

check the website. WR5sp. Like mentioned, lots of new pics and specs.

The Honda rep for the west coast was bragging that it was going to be a 6sp, but that seems to be no so anymore.

Thats great!
more insight into the workings of the motor.
Worth copy and poste here....

Primary Reduction 3.611 (65/18)
Gear Ratios 1 2.385 (31/13)
  2 1.750 (28/16)
  3 1.333 (28/21)
  4 1.042 (25/24)
  5 0.815 (22/27)
Final Reduction 3.786 (14/53)
Final Drive #520 roller chain

520 T-ring chain....if its anything at all like the Oring that ships with the Yamahas, the little 250s will refuse to wear em out....still have the stock chain on the bikes....amazing set ups....but then only a 1/4 liter helps a bit too!

Wow a 53 rear sprocket, that doesn't leave much room to gear down. So I did a comparison to the klx gear ratios, and the crf250 appears to be geared pretty low. Many people run 14/48 on klx's, and if you run 14/50 on the crf250, the gear ratios are similar on both ends of 1st thru 5th. The jumps between gears are different, but overall similar. Of course the klx has a 6th gear which gives it quite a bit more range in the gearbox.

Thats kind of low gearing for the crf, I wonder why. I geared the klx faster, 2 teeth on the rear, because first was so slow, and that change seemed good. The crf would need 3 teeth on the rear which is fine, but I wonder if the high revving motor may need lower gearing to be effective in tight slow stuff. Lower gearing than a stock klx is pretty darn low, it is surprising.

Hey Spanishktoom. That is an interesting web site from Honda. Of course everything is metric. So.....for you unfimiliar with the Power output in KW it converts to 27.48HP. I wonder why they don't publish that on the American Honda web site. &%$#@!?

The gear ratios shown for the CRF250X are EXACTLY the same as the Yamaha WR250F-
2.385, 1.750, 1.333, 1.042, .815

Primary ratio is 3.353 on the Yamaha and final gearing is 52/13.
===============

The overall spacing on these bikes is nearly equal to a 6 speed KTM 450/525EXC. (3:1 from 1st to 5th)

By comparison-
The CRF250R has gear ratios of 2.142, 1.750, 1.450, 1.227, 1.041
Primary ratio is 3.166 on the CRF250R
