New YZ450F too much?

I just purchased a new 2012 YZ450F coming off a 1996 YZ250. I havn't rode in a few years except on occasion here and there with my consistent friends that ride consistently. Anyways, let's cut to the chase. I totally underestimated the power of a 4 stroke, and believe me, its crazy especially with this fuel injected megaton beast! I have been reading on here, a specific thread about "Owner EFI & Timing Map Database" thread.

My question is...

Is there a way using a programmer to tune this bike dramatically DOWN for the time being UNTIL I can get used to this unreal torgue beast?

Like I said, I havn't consistently rode in a few years and my first test ride was exciting, but I feel like its going to give me more than I can handle at a track or on a hardcore woods track. I have even thought about immediately selling this bike and going to a YZ250F BUT obviously I am going to get it handed to me as far as money goes. So if I can TUNE this bike WAY down for the TIME being until I get the feel for this 4 stroke, it would be much more worth it because I could tune it back up in the future instead of having to get a 250F and then turn around and go get a 450F again..

I don't want to be criticized for my actions here. Just looking for some solutions to help that won't cost me thousands upon thousands of dollars..

www.vortec.com sells iginitions, but with it comes a handlebar switch to switch between 2 (out of 10)ignition curves. Some are slower delivering power, some are better than stock. You pick 2 on the dial, put the rubber plug back in and fire it up.

When you hit the track detune w/ a flick of the switch or amp it up.

450$ and all the top pros use these at one time or another but they work.

When its really muddy I use my traction map-so I dont spin wildly when grabbing a handful of throttle.

Rode that bike at a demo days ride. Whoa! Too much for even quad width trails IMO. Have a 250F now. Usually enough for me but there was a two smoke 250 there too. Now that was absolutely perfect so I bought a used one and rebuilt it.

Try that ignition curve or a throttle cam.

I will definitely have to check out the Vortex***.. Go key in "Owner EFI & Timing Map Database" in the search box.. That is the exact title to tust thread..Any thoughts on this for my situation? Wandering how low you could go with those negative numbers on the ignition and curious to see if that could very well be possibly what I'm looking for or even the Vortec like I just found out about? Hope we get some more feedback.. I know SOMEBODY out there faced this problem when jumping on a YZ450F.. These new fuel injected bikes are like rocket boosters being shot out of a box lol..

OK, so I went and researched Vortex and seen a lot I liked..but let me ask you this...do you THINK it could LOWER the horsepower and torque UNDER stock settings? This is exactly what I am "searching" for so I can get USED to this 450F before I slam it back up.Then I can go the other direction..but right now, its just slinging me across the dirt! It's fun....BUT I am nervous about getting anywhere near a track with the beast right now..which is why I am trying to tune it down..I dont want to be jumping to the moon yet..I wanna get used to the big machine and back to riding in "general" for now..:ride:Let me know what you think..I would greatly appreciate it!

On top of milder mapping, you could try some old school gearing change. Take a couple teeth off of the rear sprocket and it should calm it down a little. I know it will be more of a topend rocket, but it should gain r's slower and be more controllable.

Thottle cam is the answer.

Changing the map curve is only a 10% change + or -.

I put a throttle cam on my KX450 for single track. Works great. Still have all the power there when needed.

Ok, so G2 has cams from 25 all the way through 400.. It states the higher the cam number is, the more control you'll feel.. Does this seem right? So if I were to just go with the highest cam number at 400, this should give me a lot more control coming out of tue shoot? Or is the difference not that great?

This is exactly what the dealership told me.. He said that the stock gearing in the back is 48 and that I could go with a aftermarket 41 count which will slow it down coming out of the hole.. BUT it will increase overall top end speed

congrats on the new bike... keep in mind what and where you are coming from. Keep it on the cheap and buy a couple high number G2 cams and get a 15t counter shaft sprocket... a CS sprocket is cheaper and easier to replace than a rear sprocket. 1 up on the CS is worth approximately 3 down on the rear.

Give it some time and ease your way into this bike. If you are getting tired, then stop...enjoy.

I don't know. He got it when he bought the bike, spare no expense kinda guy you know. Somebody around you must have one. It takes like 2 minutes to do. There was a map posted on MXA or something they used to take that super low end hit out. No stickys on this yet, I can't believe it. I wouldn't go switching any gearing either till you try the tuner.

He had a Yamaha tuner but he couldn't find a map he liked. Explains why he only had it 4 hrs. Our friend uses the Jay Marmont map.

Sounds easy to do for a quick "slow down fix".. Do they have a 16t CS sprocket or is the 15t enough to take out the hard hit? Amd the highest G2 cam they make is the 400! I think stock is 100.. So that is probably going to take some hit out of this bad boy.. Let me know.. Thanks partner

I haven't seen a 16t anywhere, good chance of clearance issues anyway. The 15t should be plenty IMO...400 wheel work nicely in conjunction with the 15t as well. The bike will still have some power because it is a 450, but these 2 detuning measures are approximately 50 bux and should get you pretty close to what you are looking for.

I do believe I will try this first!! For $50.00 instead of the almost $400.00 for the tuner..thanks for your help! Much more useful on this board than the shop I bought it from.. I bought the bike and then the salesman qUit answering my calls.. Typical.. So thanks again and from here I will live on this board.. Great help! By the way, the new 12's from Yamaha with the black Excel's really are a hot pick! Beautiful setup.. Ill post pics when I get all the adjustments done

Do you know which brand would carry sprokets for my bike being a 2012?? I do know however that it is the same sprokets on the 2011 YZ450F's..Now I just need to know which brand would carry a 15 tooth sproket and a 41 tooth for the back..Thanks for your help!

Yes, it's a huge difference. It's a matter of slightly twisting your wrist to get 30% power immediatlly (stock), or metering the throttle linearly (G2 cam).

Stock throttle tubes come in three basic types:

MX: 30% throttle in 10% turn / 80% throttle at 50% turn

Enduro: 30% throttle in 20% turn / 80% throttle at 80% turn

Playbike (linear throttle tube): percentage turn = percentage throttle.
