Gov't Recalls All Segway Scooters

By Jonathan D. Salant

Friday, September 26, 2003; 1:14 PM

The maker of the Segway Human Transporter has agreed to recall the motorized scooters because riders have been injured falling off when its batteries are low.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall Friday, saying that three people had been injured. One suffered a head wound and needed stitches.

The recall involves about 6,000 of the single-rider, two-wheeled scooters that can travel up to 12 mph. The scooter uses gyroscopes to keep it upright, making it less likely to fall or be knocked over.

But the CPSC said that scooters being operated with low battery power may not have enough power to remain upright, causing the rider to fall.

The Segway was unveiled in December 2001 to much fanfare by Dean Kamen, an inventor who holds some 100 patents, including a wheelchair that climbs stairs and the first portable kidney dialysis machine.

Commercial and consumer models on the list include the Segway HT i167 (i series), the e167 (e series) and p133 (p series).

The scooters cost around $4,950 apiece.

The company is offering a free software upgrade. While Segway plans to contact owners, consumers also may call the company toll free at 1-877-889-9020 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. weekdays to obtain the free upgrade.

The Segway is available online through Amazon.com, as well as from authorized dealers and the company itself. In afternoon trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market, shares of Amazon.com Inc. were down 97 cents, or 1.9 percent, to $49.08.

Bummer...!!! I have a couple car dealers as clients and they seem to like them for
running around the lot to check stock numbers, inventory, etc...

They are certainly a blast to ride, they only release the 24mph model to the cops,
comsumers where limited to the 12mph version.

A littel pricey @ $5k, but its some good gryo tech, and that stuff aint cheap. Each
machine has 5 gyros, I could see low batt riding being an issue, did anyone see the
video of Bush crashing on one, slow speed, but still funny...

Maybe they need to install a small back up battery (kind of like the reserve on your gas tank) to allow you to return to base and recharge.

I HATE THE CPSC.

I hate them I hate them I hate them :D :D

Someone tell me one thing that they have done that is good??? :)

Arn't they the same people that banned the 3 wheeler.

NO WAIT. I fell the other day walking down the sidewalk. They better recall all sidewalks. Or maybe the soles on my shoes are defective! OR maybe I'm just a klutz and I just tripped and fell!!!

I bet everyone of these CPSC people are tree huggers.

I hate people that try and tell me what I can and cant do (within reason) I have a mind. I can think for myself. I have a pretty good idea what is safe and not safe. If I want to go out and ride something that is not safe that is my decision not there's. This is still a free country isn't it??

Sorry for the rant but dang, I just hate the CPSC! :D

Well, I'll concede THAT one to them. Other than that, I agree with you! :)

CPSC has done some good.

1978 Ford Pinto, Nissan X-Terra, Suzuki Samarai, Child safety seats, Strollers, 15-ampere GFCI's.

I also saw President Bush wreck on a Sedgway - right into a bush!! It was funny :D

Yeah, but think of all the Mullethead lives that were saved by banning them (at least until the four wheelers came out).

Fixing this seems like a no brainer. Have the thing power down before the battery gets too low (set a threshold voltage). If its in use while it hits the threshold battery voltage, program it to gradually slow down and shut off.

Could you imagine getting chased by the cops on one of those? They'd probably catch me since I'd be rolling on the ground laughing. :)

"It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch battery, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made after catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular batteries. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?"
