some updated pix. will take some work for sure but I'm pretty stoked how it is coming together. Motor is surprisingly narrow and looks slim in the frame. Shifter is in the right place and the kick starter / rear brake lever seems to end up in good spots as well. Have some real cool ideas for it.

Oh, also found out these older steel framed RMZ's have PILES of cheap closeout parts for it. Got a brand new CNC top clamp for fatbars for $20 off eBay, will anodize it red.  full graphics for $25, complete plastic for $80. it is silly.

Oh, bathroom scales shows 94 rear and 92 front as it sits. Missing the head (3.5 pounds) a carb, airbox, and pipe. I think it is going to end up lighter than i had originally thought. Will weigh the motor when i take it back out. If i can keep this under 225-230 I'll be STOKED.

When you have to build an aluminium tank will you use the radiator shrouds again ?
I am not sure how the looks will be but without them (or with very small ones) the bike will be ultra slim !!!!!

Will leave shrouds, will cover the tank and expansion chamber.

Does the IT engine have electronic ignition?  Without radiators you could build a little rack on each side to hold beverages.

Yes, CDI. Lighting coil too. The radiator area will be filled with expansion chamber on one side and gas tank on the other.

Going to mod a V-force or Boysen Rad Valve reed block setup and a new PWK carb with divider plates and already jetted for my KX500 so should be close. Should run better than it ever did from the factory.

Ride,  The KX500/PWK jetting was off the radar when I put it on my 84 CR500 (air cooled).  I ended up swapping out the needle altogether and bumping up the jetting considerably on the pilot and main.  I know its apple and oranges, but you may want to richen it up from the get-go just to be safe.

That said PWK's are nothing short of amazing when tuned in I'm sure it will complement that motor very well

understood and the reason I am using the PWK is I have piles of needles and jets for them and find them real EZ to tune.

the swing arm pivot / rear engine mount is to big for the motor hole so that gets bored out slightly today, then i can mount the motor solid and get the front mounts done so i can start the real work of the pipe and gas tank.

The 465 makes more power, is lighter and EZ to get parts for. the RMZ is light and quick handling. Should make a fantastic woods bike I hope.

It'll make an awesome woods bike!  Pay no attention to the nay sayers  I built a CR500 (1990 motor, water cooled) powered KTM a few years back.  Same story; nimble steel frame, light weight, GOBS of power.  I think it is a wonderful woods bike.  Keep up the good work and I can't wait to see the finished product!

Rear engine mount / axle pass through is getting bored out (slightly to accept the RMZ larger axle). Cross brace was cut out and is being relocated for head clearance, new plastic is on the way. Got a new shinny red triple clamp. motor should be in solid soon and the pipe and carb config will happen. Holidays are getting in the way of progress. Train your wife better :bonk:

Get a complete jet kit. Don't assume the jetting will be similar to the kx500 specs. Have you considered doing any head work? Squish bands are very important on two strokes, especially on the older ones.

How does the engine weight compare with a "modern" 500 cc engine, especially when you factor in the water and radiators? I bet its actually lighter than the newer engines when you factor in the cooling system.

Also, what are you going to do with the exhaust?

Motor is very good running as it. Rode the doner bike before pulling the motor so I have a good baseline. Motor seems light, will weigh next time I have it out. I have a local guy here that does vintage stuff and can make any pipe fit anything. Will not be real hard and will come up where the left rad was and through the frame. Will be slick. Got it 95% mapped out on the entire bike, just need to get time to put towards it.
