I volunteered to work on my neighbors grizzly and may have gotten a little more than I bargained for.

Anyone have any experience in this area? Any help would be greatly appreciate.

Correct you are!
I learned this about an hour after making this post. The stator was in deed bad, so the tear apart is necessary. After finding an "exploded" diagram on cheapcycleparts.com, I figured out what was necessary and now have the stator completely removed and will be ordering a new one. Man, they sure don't give those away, do they?!
