Check out this website:
Changing Your Tire In The Woods

The fourth paragraph mentions getting valve core removal caps on both tires?

What are these? What is their purpose, how are they applied, and where can I find them :)

A valve core removal caps is a cap you put on the valve stem. But it is used to remove the valve core. You can get them at any auto store and they make them in metal or plastic. Heres a pic of a metal one: Posted Image

It has a little slotted tool on the top of it to remove the valve core mechanism inside your valve stem. Sometimes they go bad (leak air) and need to be replaced. I have seen tire guys remove them to seat the bead on a car tire to give it a high volume blast of air. For off-road use maybe to install tube sealant? :)

I guess they could make things easier, but if you have a small screw driver to depress the valve core, it serves the same purpose. I can see where they would come in handy if you're at home or the track doing a tire swap.

Out on the trail, I personally don't see a need for them. If you find yourself changing a tire in the middle of nowhere, it means the tire is completely flat, and there isn't any point in taking out the valve core if the tire is flat.

I have heard of some people taking the valve core out when inflating a tire, allowing the tire to fill faster. But once you take the pump or CO2 cartridges off the valve stem, you better put the valve core in real quick to prevent air loss.

Make sense? :)

I had one on my bike that came with the heavyduty tube. I used it to change the tube when heckler popped the front on the KTM. They are cheap and i keep one one on the back wheel. It may not be a needed item but it takes no room and made changing the tube alittle easier.Since your not sitting there holding a screwdriver on the valve.

Thanks for the info guys.

I picked up a Moose front fender bag and am equipping it with the two tire irons, the CO2 cartridges and a spare tube. :)
