I would not. They can restrict flow and can cause your motor to run lean at WOT.

Clean the strainer in the tank and use clean fuel and you will be OK.

I tried running a larger capacity one before. It was the type with the brass filter and clear plastic case so you could view the element. It worked just fine, didn't restrict flow one bit, but it only lasted one ride. I was sloppy with the install and it vibrated it self to death on the cylinder base nut. I removed it and haven't ran one since.

As someone else said... just remove the petcock and clean the screen in the tank... that's all you should need.

We use a paint strainer on our fuel coming out of the gas can into the gas tank. We usually dump/flush our tanks out once a year to clean them.

cool , I didnt know there was a strainer in the tank , I was just worried about dirt getting in the carb. On some hare scrambles I have to refuel mid race , and when i remove the muddy gas cap I worry about dirt falling in.

I run a fuel filter on most of my bikes, especially 2 strokers so I can visibly see that I drained the carb before letting the bike sit. Its also easy to see if your bike died due to being out of gas. The problem with relying solely on the pet cock strainer is they fail with age themselves, and very rarely does anyone check their condition. The harsher the additives or fuel you run the faster they deteriorate. A new filter every season or every other season is good insurance as they are very cheap.

Always after picking up dirt in both carb on my RZ years ago.It's the first thing I put on every bike I get.The fuel tank strainer isn't fine enough to pick up particles that will bugger up your carb.Most bike shops sell the triangle shaped filters,about an inch long with what looks like a perforated stone inside.Cheap,tough,the media won't disintegrate and lasts a long time.I change mine every year.Cheap insurance and will in no way restrict fuel flow.I've never had a dirt related carb issue since the RZ in '89.

Yup - every bike has an inline filter and I never have to clean the carb...

I've never had a problem running an inline filter on any of my bikes. Just don't get a tiny one, get one that is a bit bigger. That way it will flow plenty of gas and last at least a year.

I also run an inline filter on my 02' 250 and have never had a problem. Not really a lot of length to work with but is posable. Mine is pretty decant size and clear, to see flow.

But I did a lot of research on small, effective fuel filters for our old streetbike, and found these;

It has a gravity flow rate of 7.6 gallons per hour compared to 2 to 4.5 gph of a typical in-line filter. Suitable for gasoline or gasohol. Made in the USA!

There are a few different part numbers for the filter;

12-1564 (or 861C) fits ¼” hose

12-1566 (or 862C) fits 5/16” hose

Prices are around $3.75.

these type of filters are good. thats what i got. they come in different micron levels though, be aware of that. alittle bulky and may not fit on some bikes however. the bronze cone type work good and fit better in tight places

Those are for 1/4" hose. The fuel line on the YZ125 and YZ250 are 5/16" i.d.

Never mind, just looked at the Visu-filter specs. They say "fits line 1/4" but the inlet/outlet sizes are 5/16". So they will work.

I know this is an old thread, but I put an inline filter between the tank and carb and now it's pouring gas out of the overflow tube on the back of the carb.
