probably trout habitat. not likely salmon or steelhead. given that the river is primarily all granite and quartz monzonite boulders it's not likely that you're churning up any silt in the stream. not to mention it's at a crossing that is on trail. so it's not really pertinant to the discussion.

yes i'm well aware that the trails lay above and below the shale hill the concern i have is the decision to bomb straight down the hill, quite obviously off-trail, cutting the switchback. it's pretty apparent when he goes flying by the trail during his get-off.

sorry but my observation stands. that is ass-hattery riding that serves nobody but the greenies. the least you can do if you choose to ride in that manner is to not put it in a major feature length production.
Excellent response!

uhmmm isn't that off trail riding or is there a faint trail trail under your tires.

considering that's probably prime steel head and possible salmon habitat
I think that would be a bigger issue than riding up a rocky hill in the woods.

and for those that don't know there is a trail above and below the shale hill at gifford.
Llama isn't breaking any laws by crossing there. I have used that crossing many times, and it is part of the legal trail.

I guess its all perspective.
I would think greeny's and trail closure junkies would have a bigger problem with a water crossing than a shail hill ride but either way it don't matter Shane, Rory, Kevin and the rest are all wrong putting it on video only makes it worse.

Llama and Jat are two of the most diligent people I have ever met at working on and keeping trails open in Idaho. There are many water crossings there that are part of the trail system there. Orbabill is also in that class and his write up is great and we all wish every one would adhere to these policies.

I am one of the out of staters that rides there often and agree that most of use take good care of thier trail system but there are a few that screw things up for every one. In that picture they are on a state maintained trail that is there for all of us to enjoy and am very glad I have the opportunity to ride those trails and WITH those people too.

As for the video, they should think about what they are putting out to the public. They have to know what we are all facing with the greeny's and try to help the situation not hurt it. My 2cents worth.

3:07-3:17 is taken from "Eagle Beak Peak" in the GP I know it well, including the part where the dummy  rides across the switch backs.

Hey guys, my bro's and I just finished watching Moto 3 and we really liked the Shane Watts segment.
None of our bikes have spark arrestors and we just put fresh knobbies on.
Can you guys give us directions to the best riding spots?
Here's a pic of us in case you see us and want to say Hi!

I think you should head 800 miles due west from where you are now for the best riding spots.

Notice the cutout airbox for more Idaho forest air.

When you guys give us directions, don't be scared to give us short cuts on dirt roads, my buddy is bringing his truck.

G'day Everyone,

Sorry I haven't responded earlier to the concerns expressed in this thread, but no one ever contacted me about them.

So just to clarify, the areas we filmed our segment at for this Moto3 DVD, everything was filmed on designated trails (as per the maps sold by OrbaBill Dart) - we were mainly on the trail that splits off of Placer Creek trail, #141 (colored yellow on the Ketchum area map and designated as a "faint trail") that you access off Warm Springs Rd. You guys from that area need to ride that trail more often because as you can see from the footage it is pretty awesome!

We had such a great time riding up there especially with OrbaBill on his preferred selection of "trails less travelled"!

You can be certain that everyone on here has at some stage ridden off trail. From previous experience I have also learned that some of those who voice the loudest concerns of off trail riding are also the worst culprits at riding trails they shouldn't be on or on trails they made that shouldn't be there. As someone else wrote, it's all about perspective......

Get out and enjoy those sensational mountain trails you lucky buggers.

No good riding in the north part either.

Are you referring to the Sandpoint area?  I have talked to local shops and most of the guys ride in Washington state.  I'll be heading that way the third week in July and would love to hit some single track other than Batey Bould and LPO.

I just returned from Colorado and can make a trip to Idaho later this summer if I really want to.  I am not really ready for another long road trip but since I have the summer off maybe I should?
