2012 Weight Spec Missing? Injectors Clog Easy?

Recommended Posts

Not uncommon at all to see info missing on the specs. page when the new model info is first put up.

The www.yamaha-motor.com website shows the wet weight spec. for a 2009 WR-450F of just a pound less, and I think the weight of the 2012 model will be in the ballpark of what the WR-450Fs have always weighed.

Come on yamaha there's a reason KTM is outselling everyone!!!! How about you make it simple, Yz450 revalve suspension, larger tank, Wr gearbox and lighting coil, welcome to the Yz450-W. Or how about Yz250 2t same mods, don't they realize how many KTM XC 2t's are sold every year! Maybe I'm missing something but it sure seems like they couldn't build these fast enough to keep up with the demand???

KTM doesn't have to deal with the same EPA stuff that the Japanese manufacturers do and they cost much more. But I would love to see any of the big 4 come out with your suggestion, KTM wouldn't like it one bit. I would be in line for one. For now I'll just do it myself, it really isn't that hard to make a yz450 into a good woods machine.

Are you kidding? All bikes sold in the u.s. have the same epa standards no matter which country its made in. Even more strict standards in california. But I'm not sure what that would have to do with yamaha or any other manufacturer putting in the effort to make a top level off road bike.

Yes you are missing something.

Yamaha makes more motorcycles in one day than KTM sells all year.

They don't care enough about 6,000 motorcycles (about how many KTM 450EXC's were sold in 2010). They care about 60,000 (about how many TTR125's and 225's were sold in 2009). Hell, Honda sells MILLIONS of motorcycles every year. Well they used to. KTM has not even gotten to 55,000 per year yet.

It's just not possible for any Japanese MC company to compete with KTM, cause they have the market sewn up. KTM makes just enough bikes to fill the demand, less about 5%. That keeps the prices high. Honda estimates demand 6 YEARS IN ADVANCE and makes 200% more than they think they will need, and carries the inventory for 4 to 5 years after. Hell, you can still buy a 2001 XR650R new in the crate, for $4200.00

You guys just don't get it! THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT 5,000 CUSTOMERS!!

They don't want sophisticated products and sophisticated customers. They want quick, easy sales to people that are grateful for what they get, not discriminating anal retentive racers and enthusiasts......

Just as a note, Yamaha specs wet weight (all fluids including fuel) while KTM specs wet weight without fuel. The wet weight specs for my WR250F are within a couple pounds on my bathroom scale so I'm betting that 273lbs is pretty close to what this bike will weigh with fuel. KTM specs the 450 XC-W at 245lbs, so with fuel it should come to 259lbs. Dirt Rider claims 261lbs in there test, so you are looking at 12ish lbs difference between them. Throw on an aftermarket exhaust, LiPo battery, and remove some Yamaha bloatware and you can easily get the weight down close to 260 pounds. It would be much harder loosing that much weight on the KTM which comes minimalist and already has a good light exhaust on it.

I agree. Way too much emphasis is being put on what isn't true, or important.

Weight is only highly noticeable if it's in the wrong place, or if you are loading the bike up a short ramp.....or if you are undersprung.

I'd have to agree with this. It also seems pretty sensible to me as they'd save on production cost since they're just running the same engine, only altering porting and cam timing. They'd save on production cost having multiple lines share the same components.
