I need some thoughts on what goodies i should get

Recommended Posts

Hey guys!!!!!! Man it has been a long time not posting on here, but I have a 2009 yz450f with a msr skid plate, Dr.d stainless system, and radiator braces.

Now here the thing i ride woods, singletrack, harescrambles, anything. And next year i really really want to race but i need YOUR help on what is necessary to buy for my 450. I got about 73 hours on the bike and it has been running GREAT!!!! Best bike i have ever gotten.

But i will be ordering a OEM top end kit, or i think they are pieced out and oem top end gasket kit, oh and a timing chain. I know i have seen guys go well over 100 hours but i just want to do this for the insurance of the bike. ( i got a waranty on it but i really dont want anything to happen)

NOW BACK TO THE TOPIC

I am probably going to get my suspension done(I am about 5'7 and about 210lbs), like heres the thing like whats really necessary?

I was looking into different rims, like i've seen excel rims with tallon hubs with like heavy duty spokes. To make a long story short just tell me anything:thumbsup:

I work at my dealer so you know, i can get parts for a good price but thats besides the fact.

But thank you guys so much!!!! Man without you guys helping me out i dont know what i would do!!!

Thanks and god bless each and everyone of you!!!

Alex

Timing chain is cheap insurance, piston may not be necessary and I'm willing to bet everything will be within spec on the piston. Suspension is the single best mod you can do to any bike and at 210 you should need some heavier springs. Other than that I would only suggest things that make you more comfortable on the bike, favorite bar bend, grips, levers, footpegs, seat etc. Imo the only reason to change the wheels is if you want a different color.

Yeah i have heard smart performance had very very good quality suspension. Right now sometimes the suspension hooks up and then some places like rocks it hurts in. Also one other thing is that my rear end kicks out from under me when coming out of a corner. BTW we set my sag as well.

But heres the thing like, my buddies tell me to do all this work to my motor from like 11 ten mods but heres what i tell them. If i get all that work done to my motor, its not going to make me any faster than i already am. So thats kind of why i want to stick with a stock motor. More than enough power for me.

Also, does anyone know where i can find a thread, video of a how to do a top end on my bike. 09 yz450f

Reason is why i ask is because im not going to pay the dealer i work at like $400 just for a job i can do myself.

Im only 16 but i really want to know how to do a top end, then i can start making some $$ off my buddies for when their bikes need a top end,..... lets say there air filters look like they were dropped in a puddle of mud:banghead:

And sorry for the long post

FCR Suspension of Pittsburgh or the headquarters of FCR Suspension in East Palestine, Ohio. They did an outstanding job on my suspension and I've sent a bunch of my buddies there as well! I didn't know there were many trails out by the meadowlands. I live near Robinson.

Hey how do u like ur auto clutch? Like can u tell ur faster right off the bat? I rode a 250f with one and it was nice having not to use the clutch. Is anything u can tell me about it??

I ride mostly woods some of which is rough, rocky, and nasty. Its really nice to navigate big rocks and roots and just work the gas and crawl through without stalling. Its a big plus where traction is an issue as you can work the clutch by using the throttle instead of constantly feathering the clutch. You can also ride a gear high, which i do a lot and that has helped with mud and hillclimbs a bunch.

All in all I don't know if it made me faster but it did make me more confident and able to focus on the terrain in front of me much better with out the worry of stall or sliding the rear out on a turn on the edge of a hill. It feels like less work after the end of a long ride too.

Now you can still use the clutch lever too right? Now i heard that the rekluse gives you more traction? Is that true?

BTW do you know any threads where i can find on how to do a top end on my yz450f?

Yes you can still use clutch, I don't much but some

With the z-start pro there is no resistance to lever at idle (you can pull with pinky)

with core exp you have stock lever feel always

not sure about exp 2.0 thing probably the same as core exp

It helps with traction if you ride the bike in a way that utilizes it like gearing up in low traction situations or feathering throttle. It also depends how you have it set up. It can be set up to slip a little under certain situations which will aid in traction. The negatives with this setup is harder on clutch and less engine braking in some situations. It basically does the same thing a skilled rider can do with a manual clutch it just does it better and consistently. It also may help more than I realize im just used to having it there.

not sure about threads on top end, I'm sure they're here somewhere searching for them could be time consuming. Youtube may an option too. I assume you have manual.

I went with RG3 for my suspension because it is the closest shop to me, turn around was 2 days, they were able to offer me the lowest price, and again they are right down the road if i need anything changed. There is a guy on youtube that rebuilt his entire 250f and gives a relatively decent example of how to do a top end and the bikes are very similar, other than that just follow the manual and be sure you have all the right tools. You always have us here on TT to help out with any questions as well

#1 thing is to get your suspension set up for your weight, type of terrain, and riding skill level. Be honest with the tuner! I also recommend Smart Performance. DaveJ here on TT will do it for you if you send it in, or he will sell you the parts and give you the instruction and recommended valve stacks.

After that I would install a Rekluse. I will never go back. Next up would be a steering damper.

Other things to consider for off-roading are the common items like handguards, skidplate, and I like to run an 18" rear rim for a tire with more sidewall...this allows better traction over rocks, roots, etc as the taller sidewall flexes and absorbs much of the small stuff. Another item I consider a must have is an HDPE chain guide like TM Designworks or BRP.

Also, make sure that you are jetted correctly!

Definitely no performance gain from aftermarket rims or hubs.

For your top end rebuild...not likely that you need to worry about it at 75 hours but I would change the cam chain for sure (I do mine every 50 hours). I just did the first top end on my '08 at 270 hours.
