Preliminary ride on the local Mini-track:

Set up:

- Pro-action front bottom valve and shims, stock mid-valve, 100mm oil

height, 5wt Torco.

- .50 front springs; front previously re-valved by ESP, later modified by

ASR.

- 6.0 rear springs; rear re-valved by ESP (not great)

Fork action:

- smooth, low stiction, progressive feel

- low-feedback/jarring

- no deflection with supplied 10c / 14r clickers

- follows the terrain very well; great tire contact feedback

- stays up in stroke pretty well, but did not have any steep downhills

to try yet.

- Front end feels stuck to the ground.

- direct impact / nose landings are now fine. No more 'pucker-factor' when

the rear end kicks up and you are navigating on front suspension only.

- kind of dead feeling, unlike the wallow-y yet lively feel of the stock forks.

Overall:

Thumbs up so far.

Way, way, way, better than stock.

Not 'over-damped' or high stiction like SP set up on previous bikes.

No deadly deflection and bottoming like with the ESP set up.

It would be cool to hook up for a ride to see how it compares to a totally stock 07 WR..

Maybe Sunday..

Yeah, you responded to my CA Intermediate thread posting.....

Sure, I'm game.

I plan to ride Rohwer Flats 8am Sunday, staging at Bouquet Canyon road.

Rowher is half tight narrow single track, half rocky steep trails and fireroads.

PM me for info.

Glad you like it so much:thumbsup: I have had no problems with my SP done stuff but have also had good luck with other tuners.

Actually i revalved a few weeks back so I could take my wr to the track. It was ok. I left it that way for a trail ride and man the forks were horrible:banghead:. Way too much harshness and deflection that no amount of clickers would change. I guess I need to ride harder:ride:

Wait, you 'had no problems', but it was 'way to harsh'.....not sure I get that...

Seems like a lot of people here have strong loyalty to Dave, which is great. Still others have loyalty but not necessarily great results as well. That has puzzled me....

That is what I experienced with the Smart Performance fork tuning. No matter how fast (wide open in 5th on rough fire roads) it required all my strength just to hold a line and hold on the bars. Not exactly what I would cal an improvement, other than it would not bottom. They seemed fine on really slow and tight stuff, and they worked great on smooth terrain (no wallow), but they were brutal on everything else.

I meant to say I changed the valving from my normal trail riding setup ,which is awesome:banana:, and made it more moto ready. The moto setup was actually pretty good for the track considering the heavy bike, but was terrible on the trail at anything but full speed. I pretty much expected this.:smashpc:

So (ignoring the springs) you were starting from stock, and only changed the bottom valve and shims? Mine have been "done", but are harsh and deflect. How much did it set you back? Did you need any special tools?

The fork and shock had stiffer springs when I bought it, with ESP tuning.

I went to .50/6.0 and had ASR adjust the mid valve stack to be more progressive. It was better enough to go fast enough to find out it now bottomed often.

So, we put the Pro-Action bottom valve and provided new shim stack, replaced the midvalve back to stock, put in 5w oil at 100mm, and that's it.

OK, back from a 'big boy' ride with the WR and PA fork upgrade.

Results:

Forks are enough better to ride everything in a gear higher. Much more control.

HOWEVER...........

The forks still pack up in the midstroke, and effectively stop working on successive studder bumps, and you immediately loose you line, and maybe go off the trail. You have to be hard on the power and have a death grip on the bars to get through really nasty rocky terrain. It will NOT float over the rough un-even stuff.

They do work GREAT in the whoops, and are very good at holding a line in soft or hard dirt.....until it gets choppy.

So, I think I need to do some more work, specifically in the mid valve area, probably stiffer springs, and go from there...

Ahhhhrrrgggghhh!

  • 3 weeks later...

OK, so the front fork upgrade was quite noticeable, but I realized (3) things:

1. Can't possible rate the front forks if the back is still a mess. Which it was

2. Got to have balance to get positive results

3. .50 is not enough in the front to justify 100mm race sag in the rear (6.0)

with my weight.

So, I had the rear shock done with the same 'three phase' valve system by Pro-action.

I will set the sag to 105-8mm, to match the slightly under sprung set up. I should have .54 / 6.3.....

Then I will ride it.
