2012 wr450f is revealed! With fi!

Recommended Posts

Oh great. Now there is going to be a dozen threads on 'how do I put '12 FI on my '07?....!!

right here:

https://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1013467

ecotrons has developed a FI base kit and is looking for fine tuners.

http://www.ecotrons.com/400cc_to_800cc_Engine_EFI_kit.html

contact Matt. he's offering it for $250 for 1 or 2 experts to dial it in per each bike.

you must be an A level mechanic and be comfortable doing computer tuning.

FI background is a plus.

In my experience, having worked with several custom trigger wheels to EFI carbed bikes, there is no substitute for the stock hardware. Having talked to the owner of one company who sells a plug-and-play ECU for EFI 450's, Yamaha "nailed" the missing-tooth location on the '09+ YFZ450. If the same is true for the new WR and it frees the team's mill for 3 days, being able to retrofit the '12 flywheel onto earlier motors is huge.

I am intrigued by the Ecotron's ability to phase-sync with MAP, however. Can it work with 12-1?

.

The only advantage I can see over the current bike is FI (maybe) and the suspension.

Those YZ250F shrouds look like shite...parts bin engineering at it's best. i was really looking forward to the rearward facing cylinder.

Oh well, only 50 hours on my current bike. Can get another season or two out of it.

KTM's are starting to look interesting again.

Reading between the lines here: Wishing you'd waited eh John? LOL!

(Just teasing! :smashpc: )

I have my 06 YZ450 street legal. Its not very hard to get off-road bikes titled as long as they meet DOT standards. With that being said, i have already discussed prices with my dealer for the 12 WR450. My dealer has given me a price of $6900 out the door with TTL included. You could say that I am currently #1 on the waiting list as we speak. The older WR's compare just as well to my YZ450 (on the streets). So i dont see the new 2012 having any problems for the average street rider.

This is my 06 YZ450 (as it sits).

If that works out for sure, let us know. Here in Colorado, they wont deviate from the original MSRP of $8090 by much more than I'd say $300.

You'll be at almost a grand less.

Rode the '11 YZ250F this weekend at a YZ/WR demo day at a poker run. I have the '07 for comparision. I couldn't feel any difference handling wise. Rode the WR450F '11 and liked it much better than the '11 YZ450F on slippery trails. Could not feel a weight difference between any of them while riding but I'm not so light myself either. Weight was felt when trying to put bike on stand though. :smashpc:

The biggest change for the WR in '12 is the FI vice the frame/suspension given the assortment of bikes I sampled.

the sad thing about the wr is that as soon as you buy it you have to spend another 60 bucks and 4to6hrs uncorking it so that itll have enough power to run with the other bikes. i have a 2011 wr450f and it wouldnt outrun a yz250f in a straight line stock. but ais blockoff kit, baffle removal and snorkle out now it sets ya on the fender

questions answered:

the old 450 motor? have a look at the YFZ450 Quad. then you will understand..

the yz 250 frame? its the same

In all fairness, this bike is a cleverly assembled parts bin model that given the world economic circumstances and Yamaha's own financial position, i applaud Yamaha for making the effort to bring us a new WR.

Maybe its a great bike, maybe not?

Maurice: things to Consider regarding Wrs and racing...

WRs have won Dakars, GNCCs, WORCS, WEC championships.. they are not bad race bikes

they just might need a little more work than the KTMs

The top racing guys here in South Africa For example, the current offroad champion rides a 2011 YZ450f, with a WR gearbox, and a long range tank... no other changes to his YZ.

And he won almost every race this year and last year on it. He usesa YZ 250 2smoke with a Wr gearbox for enduro's (more technical) races.

Reason for not using the old wr? plain and simple the suspension was not up to the task, and changing the forks cost more than modding a YZ to do offroad races.

For the weekend racer, like myself i prefer having WR reliability, vs the dreaded KTM 450 motor... which when it blows up you will cry when i comes to reapir time.

all i did to make my bike race ready... new springs valving.. ali skid plates, and disc guards, and she was ready....

Which brings me to another point regarding 450s in general.. Most of us mortals, will never have the skill, or capability to ride these monsters they way they should be ridden, or get to the limit of the bikes performance capabilities. We see the guys on TV do this... but there is a differnce between you and I and Cyril Despres or Jonah Street.

Then again, rider skill comes into play. I compete in XC races down here, and often 250fs or 300 2smokes are the race winners.

the differences in performance between the orange, blue, yellow, red and green 450s are minor... racing wize, the KTM might have an upper hand when it comes to suspension, but then again Honda has a steering damper..

each unto his own... you can race anything.. your ability is what counts

just to prove a point... i have a friend, that beat my ass in a race on his CRf230..

You can thank the california government for that !

here in RSA the bike is uncorked for you before you take it home.

So you are saying the current old style motor WR gearbox fits the new style motor of the yz's? And approx cost? Thanks.

  • 3 weeks later...

A rider out of New Zealand emailed and here is part of the communication. Of course I don't know what parts specifically, but....

"I use the bike as part of our commercial trail tour operation. I'm sponsored by Yamaha NZ and the bikes are actually theirs and supplied by them and they have just told me that they will be supplying me the new fuel injected model WR 450 just as soon as they arrive in NZ.

They have also told me that none of the after market gear I've fitted to the WR will fit the new model...."
