2012 wr450f is revealed! With fi!

Recommended Posts

CaveMike not pleased with new bike. Not using new yz motor and exhaust completely defeats "mass centralization" which was main thing they going for on new

Yz450 in 2010. Also not street legal, no black wheels, new ugly headlight. Fi seems nice but all in all poor effort. Some say better than nothing. CaveMike think it probably same as nothing. Looks like bike someone built by self in garage.

I ride down in Baja regularly with those who ride EFI bikes (KX's, Husatards, and Hondas). No issues in the past 18 months. We run them with crap gas out of old milk jugs and we run them on the regular Pmex. I run the same gas they do and when I pull my float bowl drain bolt there is always junk in it. NONE of these factors affect the EFI bikes. I'll be getting a new WR and will be loving the EFI down in baja. :smashpc:

I'm in "wait 'n see" mode on it. Not worried about problems with the EFI, and want to see how well it carries it's weight, and how the reports are on the handling.

It's not going to be here for a while yet, and I'm sure there will be several magazine write ups on it by spring (will be looking for the Dirt Bike report in particular). Then go have a look at it when it appears in the local dealerships.

Don't forget there is a lot of fluff weight added to epa approved bikes.

Right now, the Yamaha is green stiker legal bike and it is supposed to be about 10 lbs more than the 2012 KTM 450XCF which is not green sticker legal.

Let's compare apples to apples: stock the KTM is roughly 10 lbs lighter BUT... the KTM will have no headlight, no taillight, no rad overflow tank, no twin wall fuel cell, no massive super heavy muffler. These things easily account for at least 10 lbs.

So yes, on the Yamaha, if the 10 lbs will make a difference to you, you can remove that weight pretty quick and easy, probably with just a Titanium exhaust and lithium battery.

These two parts should give you a Yamaha race bike the same weight as a KTM race bike, but you will have full lighting and a rad overflow tank PLUS a green sticker on the Yamaha. on the KTM? a green sticker may not exist no matter what you spend on it.

Once this bike is sitting on the starting line it will be similar weight and very competitive with anything else that has a 450 motor and e start.

Yamaha is not a stupid company.:smashpc:

Let's keep an open mind and see what the real world owners have to say....

Nice looking bike! I was hoping it would lose weight not gain it..but fuel inj adds about 5lb to every bike that gets it. Unless of course they chop off from somewhere else.

Having FI, is nice especially on these bikes..I want to slit my throat every time I consider doing jetting changes on my 07. Thank goodness I havent had a need to change it in years. Since thats the case, FI does nothing for me except having a lighter bike then a new 2012:thumbsup:

Suspension changes are sweet though and if this new bike handles better then the old..just wow. I love my 07 so very cool for the 12's.

Same wide ratio tranny..not happy since I'd like to see a lower first gear and 6th gear like KTM. This is a biggy for me and one that would put me to the ktm side if things were different.

Still I like yammies, they fit me like a glove..they have an x factor I just cant explain..almost like they made it just for me. I know other guys that describe it the same way.

If you were looking at the Euro version, which is plateable, that was probably horn and blinkers, but I didn't watch.

Which raises a point: you have any idea how much fun it is to charge up on the back of somebody at a an MX track and watch what happens when you blow the horn at them? ?

YUP...finer things in life there are few!!

:smashpc:

race a 1982 IT250 in vintage MX with a full up Eric Gorr Motor in her.

full lights

horn being added....

they dont like seeing a red tailight getting the holeshot...was informed that post race.

probably because its a tried and tested motor with good power and legendary reliability. Why change it? The wr's needed a new chasis, not a new motor.

Seems that the new bikes are still pretty portly when weighed on the scale. I think we will also have to wait for a ride test of the bike to see how heavy it feels when you are riding it.

We now need a shootout with the new 2012 wr450 vs the 2012 ktm 450 xc-w.

lol!!

Confirmed: 4.5lbs HEAVIER than the 2011. :smashpc:

I SO hope that this isn't true. The WR has always been a porker but has had that awesome motor and good suspension. The handling has never been great, but good. A bike that "feels light" but weighs 275 lbs is still a pig. Adding 4.5 lbs would be a shame if true. I love the idea of a 450 motor in a 250 frame. I have always had a preference for the twin chamber forks of the YZ over any bike out there. Sounds like a match made in heaven. Adding more weight, even if only 4.5 lbs... is going the wrong direction. I'm sure the bike is a big improvement over the last WR, no doubt. but heavier?!?! Why cant just one Japanese manufacturer make a cheaper alternative to the KTM line-up that is lighter, faster and cheaper. Been on KTM's now for a couple bikes but always looking for a reason to get back on a Yamaha. Now.. If they could just make a Yamaha 350 xc...

they really need to redesign that frame... so hard to work on anything on it! all my buddies bikes you can pretty much change the top end by just taking the tank off
