Which off road tank?

Recommended Posts

Are any of you using an off road tank? I have a cracked stock tank, and I don't really want to buy another yamaha tank so it can split again. I'm thinking about the smallest capacity IMS, Acerbis, etc. desert tank, but I don't want anything wider than the stock yz unit. Any suggestions? Comments? Pro's or Con's. ?

Suggestions: Some have had problems with this model, and they are more expensive, but the IMS Ty Davis model isn’t much wider than the stock YZ tank, if at all. BUT it doesn’t clear high headers and some have had problems with the speed nuts that the petcocks attach to coming loose, plus it looks like it must block more airflow to the radiators than the other models. Of course, Davis does run the thing on his 426...

The std. IMS tank isn’t too much wider than a stock YZ tank, and is cheaper than the Davis model. I ran an opaque one on my ’00 for over a year with no problems. Only one petcock, on right side of bike, plenty of room for high PC header.

I just bought an Acerbis, two petcocks but looks slimmer than the std. IMS.

I would say that about takes care of your dez tank options except for Clarke, I don’t have any firsthand info on those. But all four are 3.2 to 3.4 gallons, and all but the Davis are bulkier, wider and taller than the stock tank, but it isn’t a large difference. I don’t really notice any advantage to riding my ’01 with the stock tank still on there vs. my ’00 with the IMS.

BTW those opaque tanks look like crap after a while. I normally am not into aesthetics, but I couldn’t bear to bolt that horrible looking thing onto my new scooter so I spent $200 on a white Acerbis.

Wanna buy a used, horrible looking IMS dez tank?

Didn’t think so...

Alright hick. What's horrible looking and would it fit a 99'YZ400? I've got the yellow hurricane kit and would be putting the stickers on over the tank. Obviously they won't cover the whole thing but they should cover a majority of it. Let me know and how much $ are you hoping for? I don't even know what they run new as I have just recently decided that I'll purchase on eventually.

It looks awful because it is stained various shades of brown almost everywhere. The problem with sticking graphics on it is they were designed to fit that little stock tank, so they won’t cover the whole thing and what’s more don’t line up too well above or below the shrouds. Graphics with extensions for going around the filler tube, like the Hurricane, in my experience need to be trimmed to fit a dez tank.

I’ve had new TJ graphics for my scooter for a long time but was never motivated to slap them on that ugly tank.

Anyway it is an opaque IMS std. dez tank, probably retails for $175, I’d say mine is worth maybe fifty bucks. I don’t think you would want to put it on your bike, ugly is a relative term, and if I think it is ugly it must be pretty darn ugly.

OTOH it will make your bike look like a veteran off-road bike. Just add some numbers and run through some mesquite bushes to scratch up the plastic and you will have a true Team Hick replica race bike.

On a related note, I just mocked up my new Acerbis tank and I wouldn’t run a PC header with that thing (may also apply to WB & FMF headers), the right petcock hangs pretty low and may touch those “high” headers. Having said that, it is a beautiful tank and is noticeably slimmer than the std. IMS, but I haven’t ridden it yet.

Honestly hick. I'll take it for $50. I rarely ride trails that are long enough to require a desert tank. But occasionally I do and I need to borrow a tank or something. Just to make sure, it will fit a 99' YZ400 and I can use my stock seat and graphics. The tank won't normally be on there and honestly my bike is starting to look kinda ratty anyways from my knee braces. Email me at kkading@newport.com and we can arrange a deal. What part of the country are you in?

Actually, You know what. I'm going to back out of this. I'm sure I'll kick myself in the butt for not buying it but I'm already tight on money and I think I'll wait and spend the money later. I'm sure this isn't the last time I'll be able to find a deal on one!! Thanks for the offer, sorry to inconvienence you!

i've used the ims and i've raced with guys who have used the clarke. to cut to the chase, i now use the acerbis, and so do all my buddies. get the picture? better engineering, higher quality, just as narrow, same price, and the ability to mount a dry break if you ever want to. very nice product.
