Mega Bomb Header? or No?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have an 07' 450f. Is this a wothwhile add on at $200+? Will i notice a big difference. I have a stock bike with an FMF silencer. This is my first year racing, im in the old timers class at our local, all sand, track. Low end is key as the deep sand eats up you hp in a hurry. Thanks ?

Hey, Todddob!

I'm probably wrong here (memory ain't the greatest, sometimes..... ? ), but I thought almost any aftermarket exhaust was an improvement over the stock ones...... I'm very certain that a MegaBomb would be an improvement over the '08 & '09 stock systems...... Member crf450319 would likely know more about that......

That said, I'd bet it would make a difference in your power, on your bike. I had a Dr. D Racing system on my '06, and it seemed to help a noticeable bit. It got "squashed" while practicing at my local mx track, and I really wish I still had that pipe/silencer combo on again.... The stocker is OK on the '06, but I'd feel better when woods riding/trail riding with another stainless steel pipe versus the easily dented stock Ti setup..... Hope this helps some!

Jimmie

hello I have a 2009 yz450 that is completly stock besides a fmf mega bomb header, with a stock can, I have had a yoshimura full exhaust as well and I prefer this set up, it still has nice smooth bottom end power with alot more over rev and mid range, deffentially a nice improvement. I race in the Intermediate class in BC

"Almost any" aftermarket exhaust will improve an '08-'09 with the shorty muffler, but the OP has an '07, and that bike came with a competent system from the factory. The best full systems will only add a little bit to it.

In general headers with resonators will tend to reduce peak power very slightly, but will flatten the curve, so that it is stronger at both the ends of the power curve. This has some effect on "over rev", the power beyond the peak, but more so on lower mid-range. They work, but it's an open question as to whether the improvement is really worth $200.

If it's more grunt you're looking for, I think what you really want is what you'd get from plugging in an '06 CDI.

I have a powerbomb headers I got for my wr450. I was a little different for sure, not much though. I don't think it was worth the money at all. I noticed a bigger and more meaningful improvement from the 4.1 pipe on the end. Even worse, its very, very easily dented.

Knowing what I know now, I would not have bought it. I should have invested money in cams instead.

If you get the SS it holds up very well. I ride in the rocky Ca desert no dings or dents.

If you don't have suspension done yet I would really suggest getting that done.

I have a mega bomb header and Q4 silencer on my '08. Definitely improved the low end grunt but the over-rev suffered a bit...don't know if that is the header or silencer though.

I got the stainless mega bomb and after a bunch of hare scrambles, endurocross-type riding, and general offroad abuse it still has no dents so it gets an A+ for durability.

I ride an 06 YZ450 and I have the Ti. mega bomb with a 4.1c can with S.A insert. I didnt notice any huge power gains from the mega bomb but I did notice it quited it down a little more. The biggest improvement I noticed was when I went from a stock can with a PMB end cap to the 4.1C can. Holy Crap was it noticeable.

Your post is another reason why I am not a fan of putting PMBs on stock cans. If the muffler is brand new then it makes a little more sense but no way if the muffler has a lot of time on it.

Sacfelix, was that in power, or noise, or maybe a little of both???

Jimmie

The 4.1 can improved the power all around and the noise output seemed no louder then running the unmodified stock can. When I installed the PMB end cap on the stock can my bike was fresh off the show room floor. Once I installed the 4.1C, I then installed the S.A insert but still sound tested at a 98.1. So I installed the Megabomb and now she tests at 96.8. Still not 96 flat but close. I have not run any D36 races yet and have been hesitant because of it. I have ran several MRANN races and the VCGP the last 3 years and they dont even sound test just check for the sparky.
