I took my bike in to get the carb dialed in, it was backfiring and would not start easy, running very lean. they tell me they have it running but it is now fouling plugs and not idiling. It is a 98 yz400 , any suggestions? they want me to replace the carb.

Have you ever rebuilt the motor. If not it is in need of a new set of rings and to have the valves shimmed. Do those things and I'm betting that your carb problems will go away.
