Jim,

Your bike's behavior sounds similar to mine. Is it hard to start, even when cold?

A few thoughts...

First off, check the plug boot. You might already know this, but there is a flat head screw that holds the boot to the wire if you look in the boot where the plug goes. I was told that this being loose (I could see the resistance change when I wiggled it around) was the root cause of most of my issues.

If you do pull the stator, I needed an impact screwdriver to get the screws out (flat head if memory serves). I replaced them with hex head bolts for easier removal "next time". Oh, and out of paranoia that I'd strip the threads on stator while using the puller I used a good bit of good quality grease on the threads of the puller.

Also, if you're looking for info to diagnose the system, I had this link in my archives: http://www.gasgas.co...all-models.html Same setup. I don't know if the CDI is exactly the same as the gas-gas, there might be some minor changes between models for timing curves perhaps?

Shipping to Steve@Motoplat-UK and his fees made the repairs somewhat expensive. I spent ~250-300 when all is said and done. Shipping just the CDI unit, which is small and light, may help here. The advantage of sending him all the bits is he can fully test/diagnose.

As far as my bike, I'm honestly not sure what it's worth. I paid $1000 when I bought it in 2005, put $400 into it, mostly the above electrical bits. It's fully functional, but was used.

I'd be happy to get $700 for the bike including all the above mentioned bits. But feel free to make me an offer if you think that's out of whack.

The only remaining quirk is after sitting for a long time (>6mo), even if I drain the carbs, the floats stick open when I first turn on the gas. It is quick to drop the bowl, spray things off, and reassemble. With the fixed ignition and an Iridium plug it starts easily.

Hi Steve,

Thank you soooooooooooo much for all those useful tips. I'm ordering a flywheel puller and plan to clean up the stator plate as a first step before sending the cdi away for surgery. A friend who has much more eperience than I in such matters suggested making sure the stator plate was clean of corrosion where it grounds to the engine case, then run a separate ground wire from the stator plate first to ground and then to the ignition coil (under the upper frame member) so there is no doubt of those components being well grounded.

No the bike starts well hot or cold except it has shut down (electrically) a couple of times when run hard and its very hot. I hope it's the loose connections I found behind the radiator recently??????

I really love riding the bike and may have to kick in more $$ to get this ignition system corrected if my shadetree efforts are unsuccessful.

I regret that you are selling yours but understand about the point of diminishing returns. Stay in touch

Did you ohm out all the connections per that chart? Both when cold and hot? That would identify possible bad connections. FWIW, my stator was pristine behind the cover. No rust or any such issues.

Checking the coil's ground is a good idea. I'd also be sure the CDI box has a solid ground and good connections. It's probably the most exposed of all of these components.

Also the plug wire is an easy check as well.

There isn't much wiring on the bike, and those connections behind the radiator could be the cause as well.

Pulling the stator on such an old bike is non-trivial, I thought. I'd avoid doing it if you can avoid it.

As far as selling, it's more about not having the time with young kids (1yr and 6yr). But as much as I like riding, it's good to be a dad. I hate having unused bikes around, I'd rather see them get to someone who will value/use them.
