Took my 09 YZ450F out today for the first time. Noticed some clikcing comeing from the chain..

Got it home and realized it was tapping the inner frame rail.. Few Questions..

1. What could be causing this?
2. Does anyone make a chain slider that has higher edges to keep the chain from coming in contact with the frame?
3. What is the purpose of the lower chain guide( under the swing arm)? Is this just to keep it inline with the rear sprocket?

4. How can I keep this from getting worse?

The chain could be too worn and have too much side play. Or its not tight enough. Just a couple ideas.

1. The three main causes of this are:
  • Rear wheel misalignment. Double check it. The rear sprocket needs to be pointed straight at the front.
  • Too much lateral slop in the chain (especially when the rear wheel is misaligned)
  • Not enough clearance. Can't fix that one.
2. No

3. Yes. The lower guide functions to ensure that the chain will feed onto the rear sprocket correctly.

4. It's normal, really, but you can minimize it by keeping the wheel aligned correctly, and by keeping a high quality chain in good condition always on the bike.

Before you go tightening the chain to fix this, read:
