Forgot to check valves before pulling and replacing cylinder, piston & rings. Bolted cylinder and head back on, torqued as per manual. Checked valves and they where beyond adjustment. Pulled apart and sent head off to be rebuilt. Can I reuse head/cylinder gaskets that where torqued but never heated by runnning engine?

I have done before when in a tight corner and had no problem, but I would always prefer to use new gaskets if possible.

no a gasket is like a condom, only good once. Maybe you could use it twice but not worth it in my book.

X2. You could try to re-use them, but will it have been worth it if you end up having to take the engine apart again just to replace them ? Not worth it to me, I'd rather spend the $25 and know that I won't have to be looking for any issues at the track.

Just my $0.02

Thanks guys. I'll order new gaskets. Have time waiting for head to be remachined.

Just to offer another opinion... I've reused head gaskets on several engines (including my WR426 and BMW 1100), and after significant research believe it to be a fine practice in the case of multi-layer gaskets like the one on these bikes. Spraying it with copper gasket spray is said to be a good idea.

Naturally if the gasket looks trashed, it probably is. If it looks fine, I'd reuse it. Plenty of serious car tuner types reuse the head gaskets on their high compression race motors with no ill effects.

I reuse gaskets when they look good and when the consequence of failure isn't great (clutch cover, cam cover, etc.). A head gasket is something that you don't want to risk failure on. I would only re-use one in a pinch.
