I used to equate the Harley with shiney chromey stuff and only coming out when there is no wind, no pollen, no clouds in the sky, let alone no wet stuff on the roads.
However a guy just up the road from me rides a Harley to and from work just as I ride my BMW, whether it's 40 degrees and pouring outside or not, he rides to and from work.  He just leaves later than I do so I rarely see him.  We both just happened to be gassing up at the same time one afternoon so I got to BSing with him.  I don't have ANY chrome on my bike.  Everything is either painted or anodized, however he's got chrome EVERYWHERE, and he takes the time to wash it a couple times a week.
And I'm in no position to bag on riding gear.  I've got several outfits for off road, and several for the street.  It's all part of the package.   Not any different than my changing from work clothing to something respectable to go out to dinner.
