Hi all, I am looking for a bike for my wife. I ride blue, so I have been looking at the TTR 225. What's this 230 all about anyway, and how does it compare to the Yamaha? How much are they? Can you find a decent used one? This will be her first dirt bike, she is 5'6", but she rides a Harley Softail (lowered) on the street. I did notice the 225 power is a little, uh, tame (well, compared to my 426...).

Any input? Thanks.

Have I mentioned that I love TT! I mean, what a great way to hook up with cool people, and be able to compare notes, help each other out, and so on.

Anyway, that is an awesome offer! We might have to take you up on that one of these days. I really don't know anything about the Honda, except I think I read somewhere it may be a little more of an intermediate bike than the ttr which I think is more of a beginner bike. What do you think?

We are going to Wenatchee this weekend, and hooking up with Brandon over there, never met him before!

The crf actually has slightly less hp from the reports I have seen. It is slightly lighter than the ttr 225. If she can ride the harley then get her a ttr 250 you can lower it( my 5 fot 3 inch wife rides one and can touch flat foot) I shaved the seat and added a kouba link. The 250 is way better than the 230 or 225 will ever be. The 250 is also e start. The 230 looks more stylish than the 225 but still has about the same suspension. The 230 has a rear drum and non adjustable shock. The 250 has disc all around and adjustable shocks. I had a 225 and that thing was a joke for anyone but a beginner. The 250 is similar to the xr 250 and I wouldn't be embarrassed to ride it. It is no race bike but neither is the 230 or 225. Don't get me wrong the 230 is a nice bike and would provide years of enjoyment for her, but if she is at all serious or aggresive the ttr 250 would be a better bike. Come down to nor cal and she can ride ours. :)

I would go with the Honda. The TTR 225 weighs as much as most NFL lineman. I liked the TTR, but it was too heavy compared to some of the other casual bikes.

If she is strong enough to deal with the ttr225, I think she could kickstart an xr 250, right????

Hmmm, she rode the 225 this weekend and had a good time. Thinking the way to go might be to find a beat up (read cheap) used 225 for her to ride for a year, then get her a 250 after she learns a bit more. At that time we could compare the ttr to the xr or whatever comes out next year?

As a guy who owned a 2002 TTR225 I have to say that for the $2701.00 out the door tax and title included that the lil' Yamaha is alot of bang for the buck. I picked one up last year to chase my boy on his PW80. My brother has a 2001 XR400 and in the woods I could stay right with him. In open fields the XR400 could pull away pretty good, But I doubt you'll be racing your wife. I even had it on a MX track once and wasn't the slowest guy out there. I even passed a few guys here and there. The trick to going fast on a TTR225 is to rev it out. I'm no lightweight either 235lbs. Sure the TTR was too small for me, But it wass cheap and new and did it's job well for a year. Plus I sold it for $2500 a year later! I'm on a KTM625 now and there are times I miss my lil' Yammy-Ha! It was a nice trail bike. :)

Someone bought a year old used ttr225 from a 235# guy with a penchant for mx tracks for $2500.00? Cash? :)

Can I have that guys number? I think I have some stuff around here...

the 230 is an awesome beginner bike. Its my wifes first dirt bike, and with the 12 countershaft, at idle, she can pick through rocks. Yeah you loose about 3-4 on the top end, but she dont care!
I would say that it is an awesome beginner bike that can stay with someone until intermediate...hows that...
Happy button is sweet....and so much aftermarket stuff out there now for the 150 and 230 (same frame etc)...honestly hard to go wrong...
As I said, I can drag it out of the garage and you can give my wifes a spin if you want...
I would take the Honda over the 225 yamaha...no questions...suspension all that stuff.
Good luck!
Let me know on the ride....

Yeah, I saw two 230's in the back of a truck today, good looking little bikes! I just hope she wouldn't be intimidated at first by the seat height. She is under the mistaken assumption that your feet should be able to touch the ground! Hell, I am 6'1" and can't touch flat footed on the 426!

Going out of town for weekend, be back monday. Definitely want to get out and ride more next week!

Talk to you in a few days. :)

A TTR225 or CRF230 for the wife? Come on! It's a tank. Have her try leaning it over at the dealer and see if she's okay with it. Personally, I think it's way too heavy (even heavier than my CRF450).

Just get a highly modified used TTR125L for her.

Anybody have the weights, with no fuel, of the CRF 150 and 230? I haven't seen any mag's publish the weights in any tests....

Also, a 12-T countershaft sprocket? And it works like a granny gear without too much wear?

thanks--------geremachek

CRF150 = 216 lbs.
CRF230 = 238 lbs.

I think I saw those in Dirt Bike Magazine.

I just traded my CRF230 for a CRF250R on Thursday and I can tell you that the machine is a high quality unit that has plenty of suspension, ease of operation, lots of power and is a wonderfull bike, but you also neeed to look at the CRF150. I have one of those also, it is the same bike with smaller wheels and no electrics, You can call me toll free for more details at 866 274 9196. I have owned Blue, yellow, and other machines but you just can't go wrong at all with RED !
