My buddy has a 2007 450 that has locked up. He has since replaced with an 08 and wants to sell the 2007 AS IS.

He says it was a low speed lock up, coming out of a corner. I assume it could have dropped a valve but it could very well be something in the gear box. The only info I have is that he thinks he always over filled the bike with oil, always poured in 2 quarts, he thought he was doing all the good until he found out later that it takes much less than that.

Here is my question:

Does the overfill really have something to do with either scenario?

What do you think the bike is worth AS IS? I mean its perfect other than the locked up motor.

Any insight or opinion is greatly appreciated!

By always overfilled do you mean since 2007? I wonder if the cylinder could have got filled with oil and just stopped it cold? But if that were the case it seems like it would of happened earlier. I would pull the plug out and see if you could turn it over. I had an 06 that had a serious kick starter mechanism malfunction and locked the bike up, so check that. An 07 with unknown issues that doesn't run. I'd think its worth about 11-1300 and thats only if a guy can do the work himself. It's hard to buy a seized bike when it could be an easy fix or very expensive.

maybe its still overfilled drain the a oil check for contaminants maybe gear pieces and fill with one quart it might make it

At worst, overfilling will make a mess.

An '07 is worth what? $3K? This one is broken, and could need $2000 put into it. Offer him $8-900.

Yeah, u guys all confirmed what i was thinking, especially the $800 part. I figured it would just make a mess too gray. Thanks guys, Im gonna see if i can't end up with this sled!

Is it possible to hydro lock one of these engines from seriously over filling? Even so that's not something that would cause the engine to be working fine one second and then seized the next i guess.

Not that I know of, typically these engines just push the extra oil out of the draft tube. My guess is that the cam chain stretched and jumped time running the valves into the piston, but that is simply because that is the common issue on these bikes if the cam chain is not changed regularly and your buddy doesn't sound like the type to change the cam chain (since he obviously didn't look at the manual at all). It really could have anything wrong with the engine, so you really have to assume that the engine is a total loss, anything better than that is just money in your pocket. I agree a rolling chassis in good shape is worth about $800-$900, so that's all the bike is worth unless he opens up the engine and finds out what is still good inside.

Yeah, Its a deal for me because i have all the tools and know how to do ANY overall to the engine. I look at it as, "it dont matter what the failure is just let me get it and fix it" but i do have to get into the deal cheap enough to justify fixing the machine. All i will be out is parts and my time. But i got lots of time, no bike at the moment, and i like workin on em, so a win win all the way for me!

If i were from texas, i would offer your friend 800-900 easily. That is super cheap, and more than likely its nothing major. and like you said you enjoy working on them, just make sure to get the manual and your set. Yamaha has the best owners manual in the business.

overfilling can cause extra pressure and blow gaskets and things too. i don't know if that has anything to do with it, but i know it happens. haha

True, by virtue of there being a breather on the engine, the pressure stays fairly close to atmospheric in the engine regardless of the amount of oil in it. It is pressurised in the passageways downstream of the pump, but more oil is not suddenly going to make to pump operate at a higher pressure.
