2007 & newer Skid Plate question

Recommended Posts

I am about to replace the stock plastic skid plate and am considering the Flatland racing or Ricochet plates. From what I can gather neither of them cover the lower rear frame tubes but are both about the same quality and materials. Both are about the same price ($83 for Ricochet and $95 for Flatland) although I have $60 in credit at Rocky Mountain ATV so that makes me lean towards the Ricochet as they sell that one. They also have the Eline Carbon fiber one but it is $130 and the Acerbis at $76 but I have not heard good things about it. I do normal Northern California trail riding and avoid rocks when possible. Not hard on a bike at all. Any suggestions or recommendations?

I have the Flatland skid plate on a 2008 WR450F. It extends rearward to approx. the forward edge of the foot pegs. It is very thick and offers excellent protection to the side cases, as opposed to the stock plastic skid plate which let that "pesky" rock punch a hole in the side case of my then new motorcycle. Ask Rocky Mountain ATV if they will order it for you, so you can use your credit.

Carbon fiber does not seem to withstand the rigors of serious offroad riding, where lots of rocks and logs are routinely encountered.

I just did a quick Google search for "best price Flatland skid plates", there are any number of stores that will sell a skid plate for a Yamaha for $85 plus shipping of typically $9.95.

Gotta disagree with you...

THIS is the best heavy duty full coverage plate money can buy http://worksconnection.com/details.php?id=613&modyear=275&return=275-7-WR450F

It completely covers the lower rails ALL the way to the back of the bike.

But, its $$$$$?

YIKES... What do they make that thing out of? It must be a government spec unit....:worthy: using lots of titanium. WOW $200 for a skid plate? ?

Yeah it cost the bucks. My neighbor has it on his 07 and it truly is beefy/full coverage. But, money is no object for him:smirk:

In case anybody is keeping score it is now -

Flatland - 3 $ 95.00 + shipping

Ricochet - 1 $ 84.00 + shipping

Scorpion - 1 $129.00 - shipped

GYTR - 1 $115.00

Works Connection - 1 $195.00

I ended up ordering the Scorpion heavy duty. The # 1 reason was with the 20% discount given to TT members ? it brought the price down to $103 shipped and the second reason is i also got the radiator guards for the same 20% discount. I love the look of the Scorpion products. I will post pictures once they arrive and post a review of the products.

Good choice

You can be happy to know that Scorpion racing does a good job sponsoring our local off road race series :worthy:
