Brian,

Great post!
Just wondering if there has been any definitive, "long term" (since the Spring 2011) feedback from people who had this problem and tried this fix?

I just bought a 2008 XR650L (miles: 2205). I love it. Smooth running...BUT it stalls when I start coming to a stop and downshifting, clutch in of course. Very strange. Have not adjusted the idle up yet but curious as to the CDi fix that you address here.

For those that have had the stalling into a stop problem that I am experiencing and have done this CDi fix I would be interested to know what sort of results you have had.

Thanks in advance for any feedback!
Sam

I would start by looking at the coil, coil wire, and spark plug boot. The spark plug boot is kinda screwed onto the coil wire. Maybe a bad connection, that shows up at low RPM's. Maybe someone here can explain it better.
Not sure if this will help, but.
My XRL would not start at times.
I tried several things on my XRL. It finally turned out to be in the Sttart Button assembly. Keep in mind my XRl was a 2003, dust had accumulated in the button, sticking there with the factory di-electric lube. This created a Bad connection upon start up. I cleaned the assembly, solved my XRl problems.

Ever since i started repairing these (3 years ago)..........i have not had a failure of the repaired CDI.....not sure how long they`ll last..

When mine starting acting up.......it would stall at stop lights....when almost stopped,,then it would restart after a few minutes and alot of swearing......nothing worse than a bike that stalls at stop lights,,just looking to get rearended by a car.....

If it starts up immediately after it stalls,,and doesn`t get worse as time goes by...i`d say it`s not the CDI...these CDI`s usually get worse,,and will not restart immediately...

I`d look at the carb,,clean it,,rejet.......see how it runs..

:smirk: Yep, clean the carb good, then see how it runs.
If before you bought the bike. it had set up for long periods, you may just ave a gummed up carb.
Start with the small things first.

Awesome post.
Just let me throw this out there...
My 1983 Honda V45 Magna (VF700C ) was blowing cdi units every 10 miles. the bike has 2 of 'em.
repair shop was stumped, annoyed, they replaced and blew 3 cdi sets, then told me "get it out of here, we can't fix it" 6 weeks later.
the smoking gun was... the ground bolt for the wiring harness looked like a fuzzy white cigarrette ! when they loose ground, they blow up.
SO....... make sure you check your grounds !!!
