Yeah, roadracing will be much more expensive... tires alone! But I have to break your rule and answer even though I've never raced MX. I just want to say that you can have the best of both worlds... You are in Michigan so you are in luck. Find some flattrack racing in your local area and just get a pit pass and check the sport out from the racer's perspective. Once you get to know a racer or two some one will gladly let you enter and amateur class and ride their bike. It will change your life!! Sure changed mine... :ride:

Check it out! Grassroots racing at it's best... affordable and easy to learn... an American original sport thats addicting as he11. Classes for all levels from beginners to pro's, pee wee's to vintage, etc... Just my 2 cents!

Agreed! But if you're budget is limited, stick to enduro/hare scrambles

I race motocross on a YZ250.  It is a lot of fun.  The speeds are not as deadly and the crashes arent at 80+ mph like in road racing.  Motocross is also a lot cheaper than road racing.  The tires need replacing less and at a lower price, plastics are cheaper than body kits, the gear is cheaper, the entry fees are cheaper.  There are also a few different race disciplines that you can enter with the same bike.  Harescrambles, motocross, supermoto, Ice racing, and supercross all on the same bike with really cheap modifications to get it ready (supermoto is pricey tho).  You can get a dirtbike with a lot of power, make it supermoto ready, and do both sports on the same bike.  Motocross riders are usually pretty good at street racing if they switch.  This is because motocross riders encounter SO MANY different surfaces and obstacles.  Bike skills for days.  Street racers are usually not as good at motocross as motocross riders are at street racing.  I have never road raced, but I can say with certainty that you will love motocross if you do it.  It is fun and more affordable.  Road racing also looks fun.  Its less affordable, but definitely looks fun, and chicks dig it more than moto for some reason.
